Job description

Position Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete such as floors, walkways, sidewalks, roads, or curbs using a variety of hand and power tools. One will align forms for sidewalks, curbs, and gutters, patch voids, and use saws to cut expansion joints. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion, which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork, most importantly with each built upon the all-important foundation of Integrity.

Specific Responsibilities
  • Signals concrete truck driver to position vehicle to facilitate pouring concrete.
  • Moves discharge chute of truck to direct concrete into forms.
  • Spreads concrete into inaccessible sections of forms with a rake or shovel.
  • Levels concrete to specified depth and workable consistency with handheld screen and floats to bring water to the surface and produce a soft topping.
  • Smooths and shapes surfaces of freshly poured concrete.
  • Finishes concrete surfaces and wets and rubs concrete with an abrasive stone to finish.
  • Removes rough or defective spots from concrete surfaces and patches holes with fresh concrete or epoxy compound.
  • Molds expansion joints and edges.
  • Sprinkles colored stone chips, powdered steel, or coloring powder on concrete to produce the prescribed finish.
  • Produces rough concrete surface with a broom.
  • Mixes cement with hoe or concrete-mixing machine.
  • Directs subgrade work, mixing of concrete, and setting of forms.
  • Breaks up and repairs old concrete surfaces.
  • Maintains equipment and tools to ensure long-lasting use.
  • Operates all equipment and tools required to do each job, which may include cement mixing machines, power trowels, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment, and other instruments.

Position Requirements
  • A minimum of three years of experience finishing concrete structures, pier foundations, steel forming systems, and pouring concrete is requested. A high school diploma or GED is preferred. Additionally, the incumbent must:
    • Be able to work in constant change in weather and site conditions.
    • Be able to lift, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and reach to perform everyday job tasks.
Physical / Mental Requirements
  • The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.
  • The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hats, safety glasses, respirators, ear plugs, steel-toed shoes, or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.
  • This individual must also have the ability to identify critical issues and formulate action plans with all levels of management, including corporate and executive.
  • The incumbent must possess the ability to remain calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as dictated by the circumstance of the incident and as directed by the Safety Representative or other management personnel. Must be capable of evacuating the work area in a timely manner should an emergency situation arise.
