Postdoctoral Scientist – Smidt Heart Institute (Chugh Lab) – Full Time

Job Summary: Working independently but in close cooperation and in consultation with the Director of the Center for Cardiac Arrest Prevention (CCAP), the Research Fellow will be involved in new and ongoing projects at the CCAP. Funded by grants from NIH/NHLBI, the mission is to discover and implement novel clinical tools for prediction and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest, thereby reducing the burden of sudden cardiac death in the community. Unique opportunities to analyze existing data and publish papers; may develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols; analyze and interpret data; assist in preparation of grant proposals; participate in publications and presentations as author or co‑author. Not responsible for generating grant funds.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparation of grant proposals, though not responsible for generating grant funds.
  • Participate in publications and presentations as author or co‑author.
  • Design and perform analyses independently or semi‑independently; maintain appropriate experimental records and documentation; discuss results with the Principal Investigator.
  • Develop, adapt, and implement new research techniques and protocols.
  • Analyze, interpret, summarize, and compile data; perform routine and complex analyses throughout training period.
  • Observe MD‑patient or MD‑human research subject interactions as they pertain directly to research being performed.

Educational Requirements:

  • Doctorate (MD) plus clinical cardiology or clinical electrophysiology sub‑specialty clinical training for at least two years.

Experience:

  • At least 1 year of experience acquiring thorough technical and theoretical knowledge of a research project and objectives during a 1‑5 year post‑doctoral appointment.
  • Demonstrated record of written and published scientific papers.
  • Demonstrated aptitude to ask research questions and successfully publish papers and/or secure funded grants.

Physical Demands:

  • Able to perform moderate lifting.
  • Able to sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods of time.
  • Able to read papers and online documents.
  • Able to operate standard office equipment.
  • Able to exercise physical ability and perspective acuity to satisfactorily perform essential job functions.
