Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories invites applications for a Postdoctoral Appointee in Complex Metal Alloys for Hydrogen Storage and Purification. The role focuses on hydrogen interactions with compositionally complex alloys and metallic glasses, aiming to enable rational design using earth-abundant elements and AI-driven workflows.

The role emphasizes high-throughput synthesis, advanced characterization (X-ray, neutron, PDF), and performance testing under realistic conditions.

Qualifications

• PhD in chemistry, metallurgy, materials science, or related field.
• Expertise in synthesis of new materials and alloys and their chemical and structural characterization.
• Experience with alloy synthesis, glove-box techniques, and characterization techniques (spectroscopy tools, X-ray and/or neutron diffraction, electron microscopy).

Responsibilities

• Perform high-throughput synthesis of metal alloys using additive manufacturing (AM) and automated arc-melting platforms.
• Characterize metal alloy structure using in situ diffraction and spectroscopy methods (X-ray, neutron, PDF).
• Perform Pressure-Composition-Temperature, hydrogen permeability, and long-term cycle life measurements.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including computational modeling and AI/data science.
• Present results at technical conferences and write manuscripts for journals.
