Job description

Opportunity to conduct applied research with BP science staff in collaboration with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) scientists. The project will examine the rapidly growing body of information and data regarding oil and gas exploration and production activities on the marine environment, with a focus on the environment in the Gulf of Mexico. It will include the creation of information summaries and knowledge transfer tools in support of regional operational planning, baseline gap analysis and regulatory compliance. The candidate selected for the role will work primarily in Houston, TX with the BP team of environmental science professionals, with a portion of the time spent at WHOI collaborating with senior scientists. At this time, the WHOI scientists supporting this project are: Drs. Neel Aluru, Darlene Ketten, and T. Aran Mooney.

Objectives

• BP America seeks to attract an outstanding postdoctoral scientist interested in being part of a dynamic environmental science team, contributing to and learning more about the operational use of science in the Gulf of Mexico and identifying collaboration opportunities between the industry and research communities.
• Research will focus on:
  • Understanding and documenting baseline conditions in sediments and water column;
  • Identifying key environmental knowledge gaps relative to operations in deep water ecosystems; and
  • Sensitivities of the marine environment (e.g. benthic communities, fisheries, marine mammals) in the context of offshore operations.

Qualifications

Applicants must have successfully completed a Ph.D. degree in the ocean sciences or related field. They should clearly demonstrate interests and skills related to the objectives described above and have excellent communication skills and initiative.

Compensation and Details

The successful applicant will receive a relocation and housing allowance, and a stipend of $57,500 for a 12-month appointment, with a potential extension to 18 months. This role is primarily based with BP in Houston with the possibility of time also spent at WHOI. The appointee is eligible for BP health insurance. Support will be available for travel expenses and special services.
