University of Michigan invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar position in computational biomechanics, focusing on the mechanics of hearing. The research uses finite-element-based models, fluid-structure interaction, and electromechanics to study cochlear responses to complex input sounds.
NIH-funded work seeks to translate speech signals into neural inputs for brain processing. Experience with modeling and numerical methods is essential, with interests in biomechanics, vibration,
We are looking for a highly qualified candidate to join our group as a postdoctoral scholar in computational biomechanics, focusing on the mechanics of hearing. The cochlea is the remarkable organ responsible for converting sounds into neural inputs by conducting real-time signal processing over 10 octaves and a million-fold range of energies, with sub-nanometer thresholds and exquisite frequency resolution.Using finite-element-based numerical approaches, we develop and use state-of-the‑art models of the cochlear response to complex input sounds incorporating fluid-structure interaction, viscous effects, and electromechanics. Our NIH-funded project seeks to understand how complex signals, such as speech sounds, are converted to neural inputs for processing by the brain.
Qualifications: Experience with modeling and numerical methods as well as interests in biomechanics, vibration, acoustics, and machine learning/optimization.
