Job description

Postdoctoral Researcher – Duke University

Postdoctoral Researcher at Duke University

A two-year postdoctoral position in physical oceanography is available at the Earth and Ocean Sciences Division in the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. The postdoctoral researcher, under the supervision of Susan Lozier, is expected to work on projects related to the Overturning in the Subpolar North Atlantic Program (OSNAP; www.o-snap.org ). Example projects include: 1) a study of the mechanisms responsible for variability in the volume, heat and freshwater fluxes across the OSNAP line, 2) an investigation of the linkages between the transport and properties of the overflow waters across the Greenland-Scotland Ridge and the variability of these overflow waters in the subpolar gyre, and 3) the impact of OSNAP dynamics on the downstream variability in the North Atlantic basin. Postdoctoral researchers are also expected to work with the PI to develop new research projects.

The initial term of the appointment will be 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance.

Qualifications: A PhD in physical oceanography or a related field is required by the time of appointment. Additionally, experience with programming in Matlab and in working with large observational and model data sets is desirable.

Start date: On or about November 1, 2018.

Salary: Commensurate with the individual’s experience.
