Los Alamos National Laboratory invites applications for a postdoctoral position in theoretical condensed matter physics. The role focuses on quantum many-body perturbation theory, non-equilibrium extensions, and STS spectrum modeling of transuranic compounds with ML tools.
The candidate will develop methods and work within a collaborative team of theory and experiment scientists at LANL, contributing to fundamental insights on electronic correlations and bonding fingerprints.
The Quantum and Condensed Matter Physics Group in the Theoretical Division of Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has an immediate opening of postdoctoral position in the area of theoretical condensed matter physics. The postdoc will focus on quantum many-body perturbation theory and its extension to non-equilibrium problems. The goal is to model scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) spectrum of transuranic compounds in combination with machine learning techniques for analyzing theoretical and experimental spectra. The work will be a combination of developing theoretical and computational methods, along with applying ML techniques. Successful applicants will join a highly collaborative project aimed at unraveling the fundamental properties of transuranic compounds and establishing key fingerprints of bonding and electronic correlations in these systems and be an integral part of a dynamic team of condensed matter theory and experiment scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
A successful candidate must demonstrate strong skills in condensed matter theory with an excellent scientific record of publications. Expertise in quantum many-body perturbation theory calculations and experience programming in either Python, C++, or Fortran is required while knowledge of machine learning is highly desired, but not necessary. The ability to work creatively as a part of a diverse team and independently is important. Strong written and oral communication skills are essential.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, or Materials Science (completed within the last 5 years).
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Further inquiries can be addressed to Dr. Christopher Lane (email: laneca@lanl.gov).
The position has an initial appointment of two years. Additional information on salary ranges and other benefits can be found online at http://www.lanl.gov/postdocs/. Candidates may be considered for a Director's Fellowship and outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious Darleane Hoffman, Richard P. Feynman, or J. Robert Oppenheimer Fellowships. For general information refer to the Postdoctoral Program webpage.

Located in beautiful northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security.
Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. Please refer to Policy Policy P701 for applicant eligibility requirements.
