Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Computational Solid Mechanics. Responsibilities include developing probabilistic life-framing frameworks for high-temperature alloys, collaborating with research staff, and presenting findings at conferences.
Ideal candidates will have a Ph.D. in materials science or mechanical engineering, experience with nonlinear models in finite-element codes, and a passion for working in a multidisciplinary environment.
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will use multiscale modeling and simulation to develop probabilistic life‑framing frameworks for high‑temperature alloys and extreme‑environment structural materials. A strong background in the mechanical behavior of materials is required. Demonstrated experience in the implementation of nonlinear constitutive models in commercial (e.g., Abaqus, ANSYS) and/or open‑source finite‑element codes (e.g., MOOSE, DAMASK) is required. Experience with microstructural modeling (e.g., crystal plasticity) applied to fatigue and ductile fracture is preferred. The candidate will collaborate with research staff and industry partners to support certification and qualification efforts for components produced by advanced manufacturing processes. This position resides in the Deposition Science and Technology Group in the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Science and Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Applicants must have received their Ph.D. within five years of application and complete all degree requirements before appointment. The appointment length is up to 24 months with potential for extension, subject to performance and funding availability.
