Job description

Postdoctoral Research Associate – Computational Solid Mechanics for Digital Cert/Qual

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will use multiscale modeling and simulation to develop probabilistic life‑framing frameworks for high‑temperature alloys and extreme‑environment structural materials. A strong background in the mechanical behavior of materials is required. Demonstrated experience in the implementation of nonlinear constitutive models in commercial (e.g., Abaqus, ANSYS) and/or open‑source finite‑element codes (e.g., MOOSE, DAMASK) is required. Experience with microstructural modeling (e.g., crystal plasticity) applied to fatigue and ductile fracture is preferred. The candidate will collaborate with research staff and industry partners to support certification and qualification efforts for components produced by advanced manufacturing processes. This position resides in the Deposition Science and Technology Group in the Manufacturing Science Division, Energy Science and Technology Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement nonlinear constitutive models in finite‑element codes.
  • Develop and implement crystal plasticity constitutive models for additively manufactured alloys.
  • Develop probabilistic life‑analysis approaches for additively manufactured materials using multiscale modeling.
  • Present and report research results at workshops and conferences; publish key findings in peer‑reviewed journals timely.
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary research environment of computational scientists, experimentalists, and engineers supporting the Laboratory’s missions.
  • Align with ORNL’s mission by embodying core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote a respectful workplace and equal opportunity.
Basic Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field within the past five years.
  • Strong background in mechanical behavior of materials.
  • Experience developing and implementing constitutive models in commercial and/or open‑source finite‑element software.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated expertise in multi‑physics finite‑element simulations.
  • Experience using machine learning and optimization frameworks with finite‑element simulations for component or process design.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self‑starter capable of independent work and creative collaboration across the laboratory.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced research environment, set priorities, and adapt to changing needs.
Special Requirements

Applicants must have received their Ph.D. within five years of application and complete all degree requirements before appointment. The appointment length is up to 24 months with potential for extension, subject to performance and funding availability.

Benefits

ORNL offers competitive pay and benefits programs to attract and retain individuals demonstrating exceptional work behaviors. Advantages include medical and retirement plans, flexible work hours, on‑site fitness, banking, and cafeteria facilities. Other benefits include: Prescription Drug Plan, Dental Plan, Vision Plan, 401(k) Retirement Plan, Contributory Pension Plan, Life Insurance, Disability Benefits, Generous Vacation and Holidays, Parental Leave, Legal Insurance with Identity Theft Protection, Employee Assistance Plan, Flexible Spending Accounts, Health Savings Accounts, Wellness Programs, Educational Assistance, Relocation Assistance, and Employee Discounts.

Equal Opportunity
