Job description

Position Summary

A postdoctoral position is immediately available in the Murthy laboratory at Harvard University to study olfactory learning and behavior in mice. We seek a highly motivated individual with an interest in olfactory physiology and behavior. Our group is interested in understanding the neural and algorithmic basis of sensory‑guided behaviors in terrestrial animals. We have developed behavioral tasks in mice using stimuli and situations that approximate natural settings, while allowing electrophysiological recordings, high-resolution optical imaging and optogenetic manipulation. In the current project, we are interested in studying learning and plasticity in the olfactory system. The olfactory tubercle is a ventral striatal brain region implicated in reward processing and motivated behaviors including addiction. Learning‑induced changes in neural activity can occur rapidly and differentially in distinct types of neurons in this brain region, but the mechanisms are unclear. We will use a variety of techniques including optogenetics, electrophysiology and imaging to understand how neural circuits are modified during learning.

Basic Qualifications

Successful candidates will have recently obtained a Ph.D. in a relevant field, demonstrated productivity through publication, and be able to clearly convey difficult scientific concepts through excellent written and oral communication.

Additional Qualifications

Experience in the mouse olfactory system physiology is strongly encouraged.

Special Instructions

Letters of recommendation are not required at the time of application; however, letters will be collected for finalists. Candidates should submit with their application contact information for two to three references from experts at the ladder faculty ranks or highly accomplished senior researchers from corporations of research institutes.
