Job summary

Sandia National Laboratories invites applications for a postdoctoral appointee focused on theory, experiments, and modeling related to energetic materials. The candidate will work with scientists and engineers to characterize thermal damage, runaway behavior, and mechanical damage under dynamic loads, with opportunities to publish and present findings.

The position requires DOE Q clearance and will be conducted on-site in a collaborative lab environment.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Material Science or related field completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.
  • Experience conducting laboratory operations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with scientists to understand, model, and predict how energetic materials incur thermal damage and the effect of the damage on thermal runaway and reaction violence.
  • Define, conduct experiments, and analyze resulting data involving the slow thermal heating and runaway of energetic materials.
  • Develop physics-based modeling for thermal damage and runaway behavior of energetic materials.
  • Describe the dynamic response of energetic materials under mechanical loading.
  • Define and conduct experiments using low-strain rates to mechanically damage materials; develop methods to measure the dynamic damage induced to the materials.
  • Develop theories and models to describe evolving material changes of energetic materials under dynamic loads.
