Job summary

The postdoctoral researcher will join an interdisciplinary team to explore the fossil record of microbial life, using microbiological methods on precious fossil material. Direct access to Rhynie chert material and Precambrian microfossils enables new interpretations of ancient bacteria and timelines.

The role supports publications, career development and opportunities to pursue fellowships, with a start around July 1st 2025 and full-time commitment (35 hours per week).

Qualifications

  • PhD in a field within or closely related to palaeontology, Earth sciences, environmental sciences, microbiology or microbial ecology.
  • Training and experience in microbiology.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Experience of disseminating findings through scientific publications and conference presentations, commensurate with career stage.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct microbiology experiments to study fossil bacteria using lab techniques.
  • Publish findings in scientific journals and present at conferences.
  • Mentor postgraduate and undergraduate projects where applicable.
