Position Description

The Nuclear Science and Security Department is hiring a Post‑Doctoral Researcher to assist with the development of AI/ML algorithms for remote sensing of uranium‑containing materials. The work is based on existing and new, high‑quality laboratory spectral data acquired as part of a multi‑institutional and interdisciplinary effort. Close collaboration with partner institutions is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Maintain the spectral data base and upload data to community spectral data bases.
• Assist in and help coordinate experimental work to collect laboratory spectral data.
• Assist in the development of AI/ML algorithms for remote sensing applications.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ph.D. in Planetary Science, Earth Science, or Physical Geography.
• Experience in experimental methods to develop data supporting remote‑sensing data interpretation.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Experience with Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) frameworks or Multi‑Modal Large Language Models (MLLMs).
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team‑based research environment.
• Demonstrated track record of publication in high‑quality peer‑reviewed journals and presentations.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Experience in remote‑sensing applications to Earth or planetary science problems.
• Experience with ENVI/IDL image‑processing analysis software.
• Experience with coding languages such as Python.
• Experience with spectroscopy of minerals or related materials.

Information About the Position

Initial appointment will be for a one‑year term, with renewal contingent on performance and funding. Candidates must have received a Ph.D. by the commencement of employment. BNL policy requires that after obtaining a Ph.D., eligible candidates may not exceed a combined total of five years of relevant work experience as a post‑doc and/or in an R&D position (excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness, or other life‑changing events). DOE Q clearance is required.

Benefits and Salary
