Job summary

Johnson & Johnson is seeking an Equipment Engineer to join OTTAVA, focusing on maintenance, repair, and optimization of manufacturing equipment in a regulated medical device environment. You will own equipment from selection to retirement, collaborating with cross-functional teams to sustain production and safety.

We expect a Bachelor’s in a related field and at least 2 years of hands-on experience with electromechanical systems, robotics, and automated test equipment.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related technical field is required.
  • Minimum 2+ years' experience in equipment, automation, maintenance, or test engineering in regulated environments.
  • Hands-on experience with electromechanical equipment, automated test systems, robotics, controls, and calibration.
  • Familiarity with GMP, design controls, change control, deviation processes, and qualification concepts.
  • Ability to analyze downtime, yield, and maintenance data to identify improvement opportunities.
  • Strong documentation discipline and experience with CMMS

Responsibilities

  • Own assigned manufacturing and test equipment from specification through retirement.
  • Prepare URS/FRS, risk assessments, drawings, maintenance strategies, and calibration plans.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, robotic, and controls failures while protecting safety and data.
  • Monitor availability, uptime and downtime; analyze MTBF/MTTR and maintenance history.
  • Analyze performance losses and quality issues; work with Quality and Process Engineering on containment.
  • Apply 5 Whys, FMEA, fault-tree, and data trending to prevent repeat failures.
  • Create CMMS work orders and asset records; optimize PM tasks and spare parts.
  • Coordinate suppliers and technicians; support audits and training.

We are searching for the best talent for Equipment Engineer to join our OTTAVA team.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own assigned manufacturing and test equipment through specification, selection, design review, FAT/SAT, installation, commissioning, qualification, release, maintenance, modification, and retirement.
  • Execute or support URS/FRS, risk assessments, engineering drawings, maintenance strategies, spare-parts plans, calibration requirements, work instructions, change records, and validation protocols/reports.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, robotic, controls, software-interface, and computer-related equipment failures while protecting personnel, product, data integrity, and the validated state.
  • Monitor equipment Availability and uptime; analyze downtime events, MTBF, MTTR, work-order history, repeat failures, and response effectiveness; implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Analyze equipment Performance losses such as slow cycles, micro-stops, jams, intermittent faults, and reduced operating rate; confirm baseline and ideal-cycle assumptions before declaring improvement.
  • Analyze equipment Quality losses, including equipment-related defects, rework, false failures, measurement-system issues, and calibration drift; partner with Quality and Process Engineering on containment and root cause.
  • Use structured problem solving such as 5 Whys, fault-tree analysis, fishbone, FMEA, and data trending to eliminate repeat failures and verify effectiveness.
  • Create accurate CMMS work orders and asset records; use maintenance history to optimize PM tasks, frequencies, spare parts, and equipment readiness.
  • Coordinate suppliers and technicians, support audits and inspections, and train users on safe and compliant equipment operation.
Skills
  • Systematic troubleshooting and safe decision-making under production pressure.
  • Interpretation of schematics, wiring diagrams, CAD drawings, technical specifications, PLC/controls information, and validation protocols.
  • OEE and reliability analysis using Availability, Performance, Quality, uptime, downtime, MTBF, MTTR, cycle time, first-pass yield, and maintenance data.
  • CMMS proficiency, technical writing, documentation discipline, and change-control execution.
  • Clear cross-functional communication with Manufacturing, Quality, R&D, Validation, EHS, Facilities, IT/OT, technicians, and suppliers.
  • Ability to balance immediate production recovery with sustainable corrective action and long-term asset strategy.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Manufacturing, Controls, Biomedical Engineering, or a related technical discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered in accordance with company requirements.
  • Minimum 2+ years of relevant equipment, automation, maintenance, manufacturing, or test engineering experience in medical device, robotics, life sciences, semiconductor, aerospace, or another regulated environment.
  • Hands-on experience with electromechanical equipment, automated test systems, robotics, controls, instrumentation, pneumatics, sensors, calibration, or custom fixtures.
  • Working knowledge of GMP, design controls, controlled documentation, change control, deviation/nonconformance processes, and equipment qualification concepts.
  • Experience using equipment data, downtime history, yield or first-pass results, and maintenance records to identify OEE losses and improvement opportunities.
  • Working knowledge of OEE components: Availability, Performance, and Quality, including the operational data needed to calculate and interpret each factor.
