Job summary

BRC is seeking a Facilities Porter to maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming environment across its residential, shelter, and program facilities in New York City. The role involves custodial tasks, basic maintenance support, sanitation, waste management, and ensuring a dignified environment for clients and staff.

The position reports to the Maintenance Supervisor or Facilities Manager and emphasizes safety, compliance, and attentive service in a nonprofit housing context.

Qualifications

• Experience in custodial services, porter services, janitorial work, housekeeping, or facilities maintenance.
• Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods and safety practices.
• Ability to safely use cleaning equipment and chemicals.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily custodial duties in residential, shelter, and office environments.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, sanitize, and disinfect areas including restrooms, kitchens, and client spaces.
• Collect and dispose of trash and waste materials.
• Monitor and replenish cleaning supplies and restroom products.
• Set up and arrange furniture and equipment for meetings and events.
• Inspect buildings and report maintenance issues or safety hazards.
• Assist maintenance staff with light repairs and bulb changes.
• Communicate facility needs to supervisors or managers.
• Provide excellent customer service to clients, staff, and visitors.
• Respond to cleaning emergencies and spills.
• Maintain cleaning logs and maintenance records.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Role Overview

The Facilities Porter is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment within BRC residential, shelter, and program facilities. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor or Facilities Manager, this position performs custodial services, building maintenance support, sanitation, waste management, facility inspections, and general property upkeep. The Facilities Porter plays an essential role in supporting facility operations, workplace safety, and compliance standards while helping create a dignified environment for clients, staff, and visitors.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform daily custodial duties throughout residential, shelter, and office environments.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, sanitize, and disinfect common areas, offices, restrooms, kitchens, dining areas, and client spaces.
• Collect, remove, and properly dispose of trash, recycling, and other waste materials.
• Monitor and replenish cleaning supplies, paper products, and restroom supplies.
• Support facility readiness by setting up, moving, or arranging furniture, equipment, and supplies for meetings and events.
• Complete routine building inspections and report maintenance issues, safety hazards, equipment failures, and repair needs.
• Help building operations through light maintenance activities, such as changing light bulbs, and assisting maintenance staff.
• Communicate facility needs and maintenance concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor or Facilities Manager.
• Provide excellent customer service while interacting with clients, residents, visitors, vendors, and staff.
• Respond to cleaning emergencies and spills.
• Maintain cleaning logs, maintenance records, and complete assigned documentation.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent experience considered.
• One year, or more, of experience in custodial services, porter services, janitorial work, housekeeping, facilities maintenance, building operations, environmental services, or property maintenance.
• Knowledge of commercial cleaning methods, sanitation procedures, and workplace safety practices.
• Ability to safely use cleaning equipment, custodial tools, and cleaning chemicals.
• Ability to follow maintenance procedures, work orders, and operational instructions.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness, safety, and customer service.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform physical duties including standing, walking, bending, reaching, pushing, pulling, and carrying materials.
• Ability to work effectively within a team-oriented facilities management environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• One or more years of experience in facilities operations, building maintenance, custodial services, environmental services, property management, or commercial cleaning.
• Experience working in supportive housing, homeless services, shelters, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, residential properties, or nonprofit organizations.
• Familiarity with OSHA standards, infection-control procedures, and preventive maintenance practices.
• Bilingual proficiency preferred.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in residential, shelter, office, and program environments. Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and carrying up to 50 pounds. Regular exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, waste materials, and varying indoor/outdoor conditions. Direct interaction with clients, visitors, contractors, and staff throughout the workday.
