Job summary

The City of Valdez Port/Harbor Department is hiring for winter. Under general supervision provides general grounds maintenance, snow removal, and performs general security duties of Airport, Valdez Container Terminal, and Kelsey Dock, Plaza & Uplands and all other Ports and Harbors facilities and grounds.

Temporary, non-benefited position working up to 37.5 hours per week with a potential for a non-standard schedule. Review of applicants is continual.

Qualifications

• Requires line handling skills and knowledge of boat moorage procedures.
• Clerical experience and attention to detail are needed.
• Willingness to work as part of a team and cooperate with others.
• Ability to work independently and follow schedules; lift heavy objects as required.
• Must follow safety procedures and use equipment safely.
• Ability to read and follow written and oral instructions.
• Awareness of customer needs on water and upland facilities.
• Performs security duties and enforces DHS/Coast Guard regulations.
• Experience with marine infrastructure repairs and port security knowledge.
• Responsible for snow removal around Port/Harbor facilities.

Responsibilities

• Provide general grounds maintenance and snow removal across port facilities.
• Perform security duties for regulated vessels and inspect vehicles.
• Screen vehicles and enforce security regulations.
• Coordinate with other departments and external agencies as needed.
• Assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, and small repairs.

The snow is creeping down the mountains. This means we are hiring teams to manage all that white stuff on the docks!

The City of Valdez Port/Harbor Department is hiring for winter. Under general supervision provides general grounds maintenance, snow removal, and performs general security duties of Airport, Valdez Container Terminal, and Kelsey Dock, Plaza & Uplands and all other Ports and Harbors facilities and grounds.

This is a temporary, non-benefited position working up to 37.5 hours per week with a potential to work a non-standard schedule.

Minimum qualifications:

• Must have High School Diploma orGED
• Must be at least 18 yearsold
• Valid Drivers License. Will be required to undergo driving history review.

Positions are open until filled, review of applicants is continual.

Knowledge, skills, and other characteristics:

• Requires line handling skills, thorough knowledge of boat moorage procedures and ability to accommodatemany vessels properly. Requires the ability to recognize potentially hazardous situations and to contact appropriate persons as needed. Requires skills needed to conduct routine maintenance, repair, cleaning andconstruction.
• Requires some clerical experience and knowledge of office functions. Requires attention to detail necessary for accurate and complete records.
• Requires willingness to perform various job-related duties, as situations require a strong sense of teamworkand ability to work cooperatively withothers.
• Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to liftheavy objects and walk and stand for long periods of time; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to use equipment and tools properly and safely; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
• Ensure proper safety procedures are being followed, to protect staff, customers andequipment.
• Be aware of and attentive to customers’ needs, both on the water and in the uplandfacilities.
• Performs security duties for regulated vessels at the VCT and Kelsey Dock. Screens Vehicles, and enforces Department of Homeland Security regulations. Works cooperatively with other departments, external agencies and the public.
• Experience in marine infrastructure repairs and their construction.
• Has knowledge of the Port Facility Security Plan, Knowledge of the US Coast Guard and Homeland Security Regulations for Port Facilities and the ability to read and understand technical documents.
• Responsible for snow removal around all Ports & Harbors facilities.

Physical requirements and work environment:

• Position works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Occasionally works near moving mechanicalparts.
• Frequent walking and standing, sitting, climbing, stooping, kneeling orcrawling.
• Must be able to frequently move or lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds with assistance
