Responsibilities

  • Oversee dry dockings, shipyard periods, and major overhauls; ensure work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Ensure vessels remain in compliance with all USCG, ABS, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Source parts, manage inventory, and maintain vendor relationships.
  • Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, inspections, and certifications.
  • Collaborate with operations and logistics teams to minimize downtime.
  • Participate in budgeting, capital planning, and long-term maintenance forecasting.
  • Be available on-call for vessel emergencies and off-hour issues.

About the Role:

The Port Engineer will oversee the maintenance, repair, and regulatory compliance of our fleet of tugboats and barges. The ideal candidate will bring deep technical knowledge, strong organizational skills, and hands-on experience with marine propulsion systems, shipyard projects, and day-to-day vessel operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of all vessels in the fleet.
  • Develop and maintain preventative maintenance programs and dry dock scopes.
  • Liaise with vessel captains and crews to diagnose mechanical issues and prioritize repairs.
  • Oversee dry dockings, shipyard periods, and major overhauls; ensure work is completed safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Ensure vessels remain in compliance with all USCG, ABS, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Source parts, manage inventory, and maintain vendor relationships.

Operational Management:

  • Cross-reference vessel logs in Helm with Tow Works, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Develop or enhance daily tracking systems for tug and barge utilization, repairs and maintenance, providing actionable insights to leadership.
  • Maintain consistent communication with Business Development and Operations on the engineering operations to ensure equipment availability for repairs and maintenance.
  • Act as the liaison between vessel crews and shoreside management to address operational needs for current or upcoming engineering projects.
  • Weekly reporting at the CMT team meeting on ongoing project statuses.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum seven years in Marine, Engineering and/or equivalent role
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous sailing experience as an engineer of a vessel or shipyard project manager

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Travel to field sites, job locations, or company divisions as needed.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds if necessary.
  • This position will be located in both an office setting and a field setting, specifically shipyards and ports.
  • This position will primarily be located in Staten Island with occasional travel to our corporate office in Albany, NY
  • Standard business hours with occasional extended hours
