Job summary

Kirby Inland Marine is seeking a shoreside Ammonia Port Engineer to support day-to-day vessel repairs, execute schedules, and address dockside issues related to shipyard repairs. You will communicate with vessel crews, vendors, and regulatory agencies on a regular basis.

The role emphasizes coordinating shipyard repairs, overseeing USCG/ABS re-certification efforts, and guiding maintenance for barges with a focus on safety and reliability.

Qualifications

• Highschool Diploma or GED; USCG Engineering Credentials preferred.
• 2+ years in the barge or tankering industry.
• Willingness to travel/out-of-town as required.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and coordinate shipyard repairs.
• Oversee USCG/ABS inspection evaluation for re-certification and repairs.
• Conduct USCG inspection for SIP Program.
• Resolve dockside equipment problems.
• Survey and oversee major planned and unplanned repairs as assigned.
• Prepare data sheets, SIP papers and work orders.
• Collaborate with vendors, management and customers daily.
• Handle special duty assignments from department management.
• Daily maintenance of barges; non-routine tasks as needed.
• Monitor and verify contractor work.
• Conduct Port Engineer technical visits.
• All other duties as assigned.

Job description

Kirby Inland Marine is seeking a shoreside Ammonia Port Engineer to assist with day-to-day vessel repairs and equipment, execute schedules, solve dockside problems and any issues related to shipyard repairs, scheduled and unscheduled repairs and shore side support. Port Engineer will be communicating with the vessel crews, vendors, and regulatory agencies frequently.

Responsibilities

• Evaluate and coordinate shipyard repairs.
• Oversee USCG/ABS inspection evaluation for re-certification and all repairs associated with re-certification of equipment.
• Conduct USCG inspection for SIP Program.
• Resolve problems with barge equipment.
• Survey and oversee majors planned and unplanned as assigned.
• Prepare data sheets, SIP papers and work orders.
• Work closely with vendors, management and customers on a daily basis.
• Handle special duty assignments requested by department management.
• Day-to-day routine and non-routine maintenance of barges as assigned.
• Monitor and verify work done by contractors.
• Conduct Port Engineer technical visit.
• All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of Refrigeration systems.
• Good interpersonal, communication and customer relations skills.
• Expert knowledge of barge repair, remedial and scheduled shipyard.
• Ability to solve problems dockside working directly with M&R office staff.
• Good organizational skills and ability to adapt to changing schedules.
• Ability to make decisions and to exercise good judgement.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds; climb aboard and move around vessels; climb 90-degree vertical ladders; bend, crawl and maneuver around tight spaces.
• Ability to use and operate field truck, field tools, SCBA, ultrasonic tester, safety equipment and 10-key. Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.
• Knowledge and use of computer software.

Education: Highschool Diploma or GED / preferred USCG Engineering Credentials.

Experience: 2+ years in the barge or tankering industry.

Working Conditions: Typical work hours are 7:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. On call rotation. Some out-of-town travel required.
