Job summary

Vitus Marine LLC in Anchorage seeks a Port Captain to lead vessel operations, ensure safe vessel operation, and oversee cargo operations under the General Manager. Qualifications

Position Summary

The Port Captain reports directly to the General Manager and is responsible for providing Vessel and Administrative support for the Marine Operations group. The Port Captain is responsible for the safe operation of the vessel, oversight of vessel staff, supervision of the cargo operations, communication with the main office, and working under the direction of the General Manager. The Port Captain provides safety leadership and ensures compliance with company policy and procedures.

Essential Job Functions
Vessel Support
  • Supervises vessel personnel at the direction of the General Manager
  • Recommends personnel to recruit, train, evaluate, discipline, and terminate
  • Implements a contingency plan for crew vacancies
  • Secures required AWO, USCG, and other regulatory compliance data from vessels
  • Ensures timely submittal of inventory reports and vessel document submissions
  • Responsible for ensuring the vessels remain in Sub-Chapter M compliance
  • Represents the company during regulatory inspections, drills, and exercises.
  • Supports customer and vessel operations in the field during critical operations
  • Disseminates information with other Vitus vessels to ensure safe navigation, including but not limited to routes, local knowledge, and contact obligations
  • Assists with vessel purchases, outfitting, and the necessary critical spares inventory management
  • Travels to support maintenance and organizational needs
  • Fills in as emergency relief crew
  • Promotes regular communication between the Vitus Marine Shoreside Support team, Contractors, and Vendors to ensure projects stay on schedule
  • Planning and execution of deck maintenance, as well as supervising contractors when necessary
  • Outlines required logistics for vessel spring start-up and winter moorage
  • Provides a prompt response to crew questions, concerns, and operational questions
  • Facilitate the shoreside response to vessel needs for repairs, parts, and supplies
  • Coordinates maintenance & repair requirements with the vessel and shoreside support team.
  • Organizes and directs maintenance personnel in coordination with the off-season maintenance periods.
  • Collaborates with management on vessel delivery schedules
  • Assists in drafting initial Western Alaska voyage plans and preparation of the annual vessel schedule
  • Assists with customer and supplier notifications/coordination
  • Developing client relationships and generating sales leads as necessary
  • Plan and schedule vessel crew changes with the Marine Operations Manager
  • Works directly with the Marine Operations Manager and Tanker Manager to organize voyage planning and weather routing
  • Assists with the document oversight of mariners to ensure compliance with position requirements
  • Communicates and enforces company policy relating to vessel operations
  • Assists the Safety and Environmental Team with the preparation and implementation of Compliance Programs
  • Performs or assists in incident investigations
  • Participates in training seminars and assists with the training and mentorship of mariners in development initiatives in professional skill development
  • Ensure vessel orientation training of crews

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in a Marine or related field
  • Master 200GT/Master Towing
Preferred Qualifications
  • PIC Tank Barge
  • Qualified Individual as per 33 CFR Sec. 154.1026
  • Incident Command System training. ICS 100 & ICS 200
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, company policy and procedure manuals, including state and federal regulations
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of agency personnel or employees of the organization
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volumes
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization exists
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form
  • Application of abstract reasoning and deduction
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in marine, or a closely related field
  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • (1 year of directly related work experience may qualify to substitute 1 year of education to meet the education requirement)
Required Training & Certificates
  • Master 200GT/Master Towing
  • 24 Hour HAZWOPER training
  • First Aid and CPR Certificates
  • Incident Command System training
  • Attends training sessions, seminars and appropriate educational classes required by the department.
  • Computer skills commensurate with job duties
