Job summary

San José Unified is seeking a Pool Technician to support and maintain district aquatic facilities. You will manage operation, cleaning, and maintenance of pools and equipment to ensure safe, clean, and compliant environments for students, staff, and community programs.

The role requires the California Pool Operator certificate, a valid California driver’s license, First Aid/CPR certification, and 12th grade or equivalent.

Qualifications

  • Completion of 12th grade or equivalent.
  • California Pool Operator certificate required.
  • First Aid / CPR certification required.
  • Passage of San José Unified test, including swim requirements.
  • California driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

  • Managing the operation, cleaning, and maintenance of district aquatic facilities and equipment.
  • Monitoring and maintaining safe and healthy pool conditions, including water chemistry and filtration systems.
  • Inspecting pools and equipment and assisting in the development and implementation of maintenance plans.
  • Performing repairs and preventative maintenance on pool systems, surfaces, pumps, mechanical equipment, and related components.
  • Safely operating and maintaining tools, equipment, and district vehicles used for aquatic facility maintenance.
  • Maintaining clean, organized, and safe pool environments in alignment with district standards and safety procedures.
  • Coordinating and guiding the work of others and assisting with training as needed.
  • Maintaining accurate records, logs, and reports using district systems and technology.
  • Communicating effectively with staff, students, and community members while providing responsive customer service.
  • Supporting school and district events and assisting in accomplishing department and district goals.

You will manage the operation, maintenance, and repair of pools and related equipment while ensuring healthy aquatic conditions and compliance with safety standards. Through strong attention to detail, proactive problem-solving, and a commitment to customer service, you will help create a safe and enriching environment for students, staff, and the community. As a Pool Technician, you will be responsible for (but not limited to):

What you need for this position:
  • Completion of 12th grade or equivalent
  • Resume and Letter of Introduction outlining desire and qualifications for this position
  • Prior relevant experience preferred
  • Passage of San José Unified test, including swim requirements
  • California driver’s license required
  • California Pool Operator certificate required
  • First Aid / CPR certification required
Location:
  • Maintenance Department
  • 1.0 FTE - 40hrs./week - 6:30am-3:00pm
  • 12-Month Position

SB 848 Child Safety & Employment Disclosure Requirement

Effective January 1, 2026, in accordance with California Senate Bill 848 (School Employee Misconduct/Child Abuse Prevention Act), applicants for employment with San José Unified are subject to enhanced child safety, training, and employment disclosure requirements.

Under SB 848, schools are required to strengthen background vetting procedures and obtain employment history information related to allegations of egregious misconduct involving students. Former employers may be contacted to release records regarding substantiated findings of misconduct as permitted by law. Failure to provide complete and accurate information regarding prior educational employment or relevant misconduct findings may result in disqualification from the hiring process or withdrawal of an offer of employment.

SB 848 also expands mandated reporter requirements and requires annual child abuse prevention training for employees and certain volunteers by July 1, 2026. All employees must comply with district-adopted child safety policies, including procedures for supervising and protecting students.
