Job summary

JCC Greater Boston is seeking a part-time Pool Lifeguard to help keep members and guests safe at our indoor and outdoor pools. The role offers flexible hours (5–17 per week) and a starting pay rate of $20–$25 per hour, determined by qualifications and experience.

You will perform vigilant guarding, first aid, CPR/AED, enforce pool rules, and coordinate with staff to ensure a welcoming, safe environment for all patrons. Training and ongoing skills checks are part of the position.

Qualifications

  • Current/valid American Red Cross Lifeguard certification with CPR, AED and First Aid.
  • 16 years of age or older at time of hire.
  • Able to see, hear and recognize lifeguarding situations.
  • Read, write, understand and speak English.
  • Able to use a computer.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure pool patron safety through vigilant guarding, first aid, EMS and rescue.
  • Provide consistent pool coverage and smooth shift transitions.
  • Enforce pool rules consistently and respectfully.
  • Maintain relationships with staff, maintenance and patrons.
  • Respond to member concerns professionally and escalate as needed.
  • Document pool activity with opening/closing checklists and incident reports.
  • Follow supervisor directions and pool safety protocols.
  • Assist maintenance with routine pool area checks and cleaning.
  • Develop professional relationships with members and staff.
  • Conduct swim tests and manage lane lines per schedule.
  • Attend mandatory trainings and department meetings.

Job description

JCC Greater Boston is seeking part-time Pool Lifeguards! This position is an opportunity to use your lifesaving skills while being a part of a dynamic team. JCC Greater Boston lifeguards keep members and guests safe while creating a welcoming environment. Working a flexible schedule with opportunities year-round, the Pool Lifeguard works at our indoor and outdoor pools in the summer, shifting to indoors only the rest of the year.

Primary responsibilities include and are not limited to:

  • Ensures the safety of every pool patron through education, vigilant preventative guarding, first aid, emergency medical services, and rescue services
  • Provides consistent pool coverage and smooth transitions between shifts through planning, punctuality and personal accountability
  • Enforces the rules and regulations of the pools consistently
  • Maintains good working relationships with staff members, maintenance personnel, administrative personnel, and pool patrons.
  • Resolves member concerns in a professional manner or escalates them, as appropriate
  • Creates pool related documentation (e.g. opening/closing checklists, bather tracking and incident reports)
  • Able and willing to follow directions from supervisors and follow protocols
  • Maintains a safe and neat pool area; assist in pool maintenance by performing scheduled checks, cleaning and maintenance
  • Develops professional relationships with members
  • Conducts swim tests
  • Be familiar with, and follow the pool schedule – including correctly configuring lane lines according to the schedule.
  • Attend all mandatory trainings and in-services
  • Support JCC goals and objectives
  • Learn all aspects of the pool facilities and its daily operations. For example, swim lessons, camp swim, etc.
  • Be familiar with ‘traffic flow’ in pool area and support social distancing procedures in the building
  • Participate in weekly skill checks
  • Serve as a member of the agency Fitness Staff with responsibilities, which, at times, extend beyond the limits of his/her specialized functions
  • Actively create a welcoming dynamic that contributes to an environment where each individual is valued and respected
  • Support JCC Greater Boston’s mission, vision, and values including through personal role modeling
  • Attend JCC meetings, and actively participate in and support the JCC/the department's goals and initiatives
  • Other activities as required by the organization

This position is part-time with hours ranging from 5-17 hours per week. Offering a competitive starting pay rate of $20- $25/hour. The pay rate offered will ultimately be determined by relevant qualifications and experience, and internal equity. Physical Requirements:

Must maintain an appropriate level of fitness in order to competently perform all job related tasks including the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment. Capable of working in a high temperature and high humidity environment for extended periods while wearing required personal protective equipment.
