Job summary

Fairbanks North Star Borough is seeking a pool lifeguard to ensure the safety of spectators, participants and staff during aquatic activities. You will enforce rules, perform lifesaving and first aid, and keep pool facilities clean and organized.

This role requires ARC certifications, the ability to swim the specified distances, and reliable weekend availability. Applicants must be at least 16, pass the swim proficiency test, and assist with cash handling when needed.

Qualifications

• Must be 16 years or older at time of employment.
• Certified in Standard First Aid, Lifeguarding, and CPR-PR before hiring.
• Willing to work nights and weekends.
• Must demonstrate lifesaving and first aid skills.
• Must pass American Red Cross Swim Proficiency Test.
• Swim 150 yards front crawl/breaststroke, tread 2 minutes, then 50 yards more with brick.
• Swim 20 yards, surface dive to 12 ft, retrieve a 10 lb brick, surface, and exit.

Job description

BASIC FUNCTION:

Provide for the safety of spectators, participants and staff involved in aquatic activities. Provide staff support for office and perform clean-up of pool and locker room areas.

Typical Duties

1. Enforce safety rules in a polite but consistent manner.
2. Perform lifesaving and first aid procedures as appropriate for the situation.
3. Provide routine clean-up, sanitizing, and general maintenance in pool and locker room areas.
4. Provide office support including cash handling activities, make change and operate a credit card machine.
5. Operate a register with a point of sale, checking in patrons, selling passes, creating accounts and keeping a tally sheet of users in the building.

Position Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Sixteen years of age at time of employment.
2. Upon hire, must possess and maintain certification in, Standard First Aid, Lifeguarding, and CPR-PR as recognized by the American Red Cross (or equivalent). (PRIOR TO HIRING).
3. Prefer ability and willingness to work nights and weekends.
4. All qualified candidates must be able to demonstrate all lifesaving and first aid skills required by the position.
5. Must be able to pass American Red Cross Swim Proficiency Test.
6. a. Must be able to swim continuously 150 yards of front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for 2 minutes, using only your legs, and swim 50 more yards (must be able to keep face in the water with good breath control, goggles may be used).
7. b. Must be able to swim 20 yards, surface dive to 12 ft and retrieve a 10 lb. brick, return to the surface and kick on your back to return to the starting point, holding the brick with both hands and keeping your face at or near the surface and exit the water without using a ladder or the steps.

1. Applicant must have good communication skills with the ability to deal with the public in a pleasant, tactful, and courteous manner.
2. Ability to operate a point-of-sale computer system.
