Job summary

Ponaganset High School in Glocester, RI seeks a dedicated Co-Ed Indoor Track Assistant Coach (Sprints) to support coaching after school hours. You will help student athletes develop sprint skills, emphasize sportsmanship and academic effort, and coordinate with the athletic staff to run practices and games.

Applicants must have coaching experience with adolescents and meet RI/FG requirements, including BCI checks, First Aid/CPR/AED, and NFHS courses.

• Experience coaching adolescent age students in competitive sports.
• BCI checks (National and State) for new coaches.
• Current & Valid First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate.
• NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course.
• NFHS Concussion in Sports Course (Annual).

• NFHS RI State Component Course (New Coaches to the District).
• NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest Course (Annual).
• NFHS Implicit Bias Course (Annual).
• NFHS Student Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (Annual).
• NFHS Heat Illness Prevention (Annual).
• NFHS Title IX
• NFHS Sportsmanship
• Citizenship, residency or work visa required.

Responsibilities

• Coaches individual participants, small groups and teams, in the skills necessary for a successful experience.
• Supervises individual team members and teams at all times.
• Knows and implements most current rules, regulations and policies including RI Interscholastic League regulations and district procedures.
• Works with school officials to monitor academic performance and stress high academic performance and leadership.
• Functions as a role model for team members, showing respect to officials and others under pressure.
• Works with the athletic director and other coaches to schedule practices and games.
• Informs the athletic director about facility, equipment and uniforms condition.
• Communicates with the athletic director about team members, issues and activities.
• Notifies the Athletic Director of safety concerns or conditions affecting students or adults.
• Delegates coaching responsibilities to assistants and volunteers.
• All other duties as defined by the athletic director and principal.

Job Description

FUNCTION: The Coach helps each participating student achieve a high level of skill and an increased appreciation for the values of discipline, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic performance. The Coach is dedicated to developing a successful team and the individual student athlete, considering not only win/lose records but specifically focusing on achieving personal growth through athletic participation and competition.

REPORTS TO: Athletic Director, and Principal

ANTICIPATED DUTIES:

• Coaches individual participants, small groups and teams, as appropriate, in the skills necessary for a successful experience.
• Supervises individual team members and teams at all times.
• Knows and implements most current rules, regulations and policies. These includes, but are not limited to: specific sports rules; RI Interscholastic League Regulations; general policies of and procedures of the district including those relating to student’s academic, career, and personal social development.
• Works with school officials to monitor the academic performance of the student athletes and stress the importance of high academic performance as well as the important leadership role that our student athletes have in the school.
• Consistently functions as a role model for team members by demonstrating a respect for officials, competitors, visitors and observers while under stressful situations.
• Works closely with the athletic director and other coaches scheduling practices and games.
• Informs the athletic director of the condition of the facility, equipment and uniforms.
• Communicates frequently with the athletic director concerning team members, team issues and all team related activities.
• Notifies the Athletic Director of any actions, equipment or conditions that could possibly compromise the safety of students and adults.
• Delegates coaching responsibilities to assistant and volunteer coaches.
• All other duties as defined by the athletic director and principal.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • All Coaches will have to receive an updated National and State BCI Check ( beginning in the school year 2023-2024)
  • Current & Valid First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate
  • NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching Course
  • NFHS Concussion in Sports Course (Must be Taken Annually)
  • NFHS Protecting Students From Abuse (Must be Taken Annually)
