Overview
Under the direction of the Sleep Services Manager/Supervisor, the technologist is primarily responsible for technical and patient care related to polysomnographic testing. Tasks include setup and calibration of monitoring equipment, applying electrodes, monitoring patient safety, performing physiological calibrations, and recording results. Provides clerical support to ensure timely and accurate scheduling, charging, logging, copying, distribution and retention of testing data. May be responsible for cross-training to other areas of Cardiology Services. This position performs routine sleep lab modalities under direct supervision of a registered polysomnographic technologist. Sleep technologist I will develop skills, perform basic sleep testing procedures and related interventions.
Responsibilities
- Learn to select appropriate equipment and calibrate for testing to determine proper functioning; make adjustments if necessary.
- Develop skills in the application of electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards; perform physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments.
- Learn to perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free; identify, correct, and document artifact; document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results. Implement interventions for patient safety and therapeutic interventions (such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
- Develop skills in scoring sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines; acquire skills in scoring clinical events (e.g., respiratory, cardiac, limb movements, arousals) using American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards; generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data; provide age-specific care
- Learns and applies prescribed cleaning and disinfection procedures; monitors patient safety and adherence to safety protocols; adheres to AASM scoring parameters; identify artifact, inadequate signals, and equipment failures and generate accurate reports.

- Comply with laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards regarding safety and infection control.
- Perform routine equipment care and maintenance and inventory evaluation; maintain current CPR or BLS certification.
- Develop or demonstrate computer skills appropriate for the position; effective written and verbal communication skills; customer service and social skills.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision to analyze complex situations and apply policy; develop teamwork skills; follow HIPAA and privacy policies; follow directions; respond to procedural inquiries with education using sleep center protocols.
- Adhere to sleep center policies and procedures; participate in the quality assurance program; inspect and maintain sleep study equipment and inventory; comply with professional standards of conduct.

Certifications, Licenses and Education
- Required: BLS: Basic Life Support
- Equivalent Experience: Within 1 month of hire or transfer.
- Required: RPSGT: Registered Polysomnographic Technologist
- Equivalent Experience: Must become registered by the Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists within 18 years of hire or transfer.
- Required Education: High School Diploma or GED
- Equivalent Experience: Associate degree preferred; BRPT-approved healthcare credential for board eligibility preferred.
Additional Information
- Enrolled in or completed a STAR-designated A-STEP Self-Study education program approved by BRPT.
- A minimum of 960 hours of clinical experience in on-site polysomnography duties; hours may be reduced if you have a current allied health credential.
- Clinical experience within a 3-year period prior to the exam; monthly ISR completions with 85% or better in each category.
- Interpersonal skills to communicate with individuals and groups at all levels; competency in Microsoft Windows.
- Sleep lab experience in collection and scoring; six months preferred.
