Job description

Overview

The polysomnographic technologist, under the direction of the supervisor and the Program Manager, prepares the patient, conducts overnight physiologic studies - polysomnograms (PSG), collects vital signs and other pertinent information to ensure proper interpretation by the physician/polysomnographer in accordance with established policies and procedures. Maintains vigilance in a non-stimulating environment and knows when to consult the supervisor or physician regarding the patient's status. Attention to detail is critical since the quality of data from the PSG is solely the responsibility of the technologist.

Responsibilities
  1. Under the direction of the supervisor, prepares the patient, conducts overnight physiologic studies, polysomnograms (PSG), and collects pertinent information to ensure proper interpretation by the Physician/Polysomnographer in accordance with established policies and procedures.
    • Formats optical disks for data acquisition, retrieves and archives data into the computer system. Anticipates and recognizes data space limitations, transfers and archives data to prevent data loss during the overnight study.
  2. Follows YNHH and Sleep Center established safety precautions and procedures in all duties to ensure a safe and clean environment.
    • Recognizes and responds appropriately to patient's medical problems and physiological events, such as respiratory issues, seizures, or cardiac dysrhythmias, including notifying the Medical Director, activating emergency help, and administering oxygen or basic life support until help arrives.
  3. Collaborates with co-workers, physicians within and outside the hospital.
    • Supports a learning environment and assists new staff with understanding patient equipment set-ups.
  4. Displays commitment to professional growth by attending department meetings, educational programs, and participating in orientation.
  5. Maintains vigilance in a non-stimulating environment and knows when to consult healthcare professionals regarding the patient’s status. The quality of PSG data is solely the technologist’s responsibility.
    • The majority of work is performed overnight; maintaining wakefulness is essential.
  6. Reviews existing patient information, examines study orders and protocols, recognizes sleep/wake or respiratory issues, and communicates with physicians or lab directors to clarify orders or patient status.
Qualifications

Education: High school diploma required. Prior education in allied health or life sciences is helpful. Preferred: RPSGT, RST, NBRC SDS, or Registered Respiratory Therapist.

Experience: Three years in healthcare preferred. Completion of a sleep technology program and at least six months as a sleep trainee with documented proficiency.

Licensure: Current credential as RPSGT, Respiratory Therapist, LPN, or equivalent experience.

Special Skills: Understanding of cardiorespiratory, neurologic, and sleep/wake physiology.

Physical Demands: Overnight and flexible shifts. Completion of training curriculum within 7 months, and passing the registry exam within 13 months of hire.
