Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the supervision of the Sleep Laboratory Coordinator, performs state-of-the-art testing for a wide variety of sleep disorders and circadian rhythm abnormalities. Ensures accurate data collection and analysis and explains appropriate treatment options in a timely, professional manner in a patient-based clinical laboratory setting.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare patients for testing, ensuring compliance with current standards through observation, phone contact and periodic auditing.
  • Obtain and review pre- and post-sleep questionnaires; interview patients to clarify history and gather additional information.
  • Mark head and other anatomical landmarks using the International 10-20 System to ensure proper electrode placement.
  • Check integrity of electrodes and respiratory monitors before testing; troubleshoot and replace when necessary.
  • Apply electrodes, oximeters, effort monitors and thermistors accurately, using collodion, tape and pre-gelled electrodes.
  • Calibrate recording equipment and document settings; ensure proper functioning of the recording system.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide appropriate care to adolescent, geriatric, and other patient age groups served, and seek assistance when necessary.
  • Transport or assist patients and equipment within the hospital; perform testing in other departments as needed.
  • Operate physiological recording equipment, obtaining high-quality signals and adjusting filters, sensitivity, and artifact control.
  • Report equipment failures to the Coordinator the following morning; maintain an accurate signal on the oximeter and document saturation at least every half hour.
  • Fit patients for CPAP masks, apply CPAP pressure, and document required patient information on the recording and event sheet.
  • Identify and eliminate unwanted artifact and document all artifacts and control measures on the recording, maintaining strict variance limits.
  • Operate the laboratory’s computer data collection system and archive raw data; provide morning printouts of oximetry data.
  • Analyze patient data from polysomnographs using CNS computerized assisted scoring or manual methods when necessary.
  • Assist with Multiple Sleep Latency Tests (MSLT) and other requested studies.
  • Maintain equipment in good working condition, clean regularly, and report unresolved failures to supervisor promptly.
  • Participate in educational opportunities, association meetings, weekly case conferences, and maintain a professional laboratory environment.
  • Answer phones and greet visitors courteously; decline phone calls or visitor requests that exceed a specified number of verified complaints.
  • Monitor laboratory supplies and linens, reporting shortages and completing charge slips for patient billing.
  • Perform related clerical duties, including filing and scheduling appointments.
  • Strip PSGs to a condensed version for accurate, accessible record maintenance.
  • Maintain courteous, professional relationships with all stakeholders, adhering to hospital standards of conduct and infection control procedures.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION

High School Diploma and completion of at least one of the following programs: EEG Technician, Sleep Technician, or A-Step.

EXPERIENCE

Six to twelve months of directly related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

Professional registration in sleep disorders or neurophysiological testing is preferred.

COMPENSATION RANGE

$28.97 - $38.99 per hour, based on qualifications, experience, and certifications. Additional compensation includes medical, dental, vision, and pharmacy benefits, contract increases, Flexible Spending Accounts, a 403(b) savings plan, earned time cash out, paid time off, and opportunities for career advancement.
