Polysomnographic Technologist - Kalamazoo - Nights, 36 hours per week - 7 PM - 7 AM - Bronson Sleep Health, Kalamazoo

A Polysomnographic Technologist works under the general supervision of the Practice Manager for Bronson Sleep Lab or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services or patient care and education. A Polysomnographic Technologist can perform the duties defined for a Polysomnographic Technician and may provide supervision of other staff. Performs other related duties as assigned. Employees providing direct patient care must demonstrate competencies specific to the population served.

Associate’s degree in Polysomnography; or successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one year duration associated with a state licensed and/or a nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency at all competencies required of a Polysomnographic Technician, and Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist or equivalent required (must be in good standing and valid in the state of Michigan).
BLS certification required.

  27. Work which produces high levels of mental/visual fatigue, e.g., interactive and repetitive or small detailed work requiring alertness and concentration for sustained periods of time, the operation of and full attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time.
  28. Involves regularly lifting of bulky or moderately heavy weights (i.e., up to 50 pounds), and occasionally assisting with heavier tasks or expending the equivalent effort in pushing, pulling, or otherwise handling material, equipment, and other objects.
  29. Collect, analyze and integrate patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (Physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history), and to determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and laboratory protocols.
  30. Complete and verify documentation.
  31. Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient.
  32. Prepare and calibrate equipment required for testing to determine proper functioning and make adjustments if necessary.
  33. Apply electrodes and sensors according to accepted published standards.
  34. Perform appropriate physiologic calibrations to ensure proper signals and make adjustments if necessary.
  35. Perform PAP mask fitting, when applicable.
  36. Follow procedural protocols [such as Multiple Sleep Latency Test (MSLT), Maintenance of Wakefulness Test (MWT), parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration etc.] to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  37. Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (such as body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.)
  38. Perform Polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact free and make adjustments, if necessary.
  39. Document routine observations including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  40. Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as continuous and bi-level positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc).
  41. Follow "lights on" procedures to verify integrity of collected data and complete the data collection process (repeats the physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on completing questionnaires, etc.)
  42. Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  43. Oversees and performs difficult and unusual procedures and therapeutic interventions.
  44. Score sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  45. Score clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals etc.) according to specific protocols.
  46. Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  47. Perform routine and complex equipment care and maintenance.
  48. Evaluate sleep study related equipment and inventory.
  49. Demonstrate effective written and spoken communication skills.
  50. Demonstrate appropriate social skills.
  51. Demonstrates commitment to providing outstanding customer service in a manner that is reflective of our mission, values and customer service standards.
  52. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, the Compliance Accountability Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.
  53. Performs related duties as assigned.
  54. Maintains a safe workplace by keeping work area free of hazards and correcting and/or properly reporting any safety hazards.
  55. Uses correct body positioning, proper body mechanics to avoid injury, utilizes safe work practices (e.g. pushing vs. pulling, patient transfer/lifting devices, etc.) and uses personal protective equipment when necessary.
