Job summary

UNC Health Care is seeking a polysomnography technician to provide professional and patient-centered sleep testing across North Carolina. You will perform diagnostic procedures, ensure patient satisfaction, and communicate effectively with healthcare teams.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of an accredited PSG educational program leading to a certificate or associate’s degree.
  • Minimum of one year experience in sleep technology preferred.
  • Active BCLS and RPSGT credentials are required.

Summary

To provide professional, technical, and patient‑centered polysomnographic testing, scoring, and education in accordance with the AASM standards, UNC Health Lenoir policies, and departmental protocols. The polysomnography technician delivers diagnostic and therapeutic sleep care tailored to the developmental and clinical needs of each patient.

All procedures are performed in accordance with departmental protocols, AASM standards, and UNC Health Lenoir policies. The technician provides safe, age‑appropriate, patient‑centered care and communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities
Core Lab Competencies
  • Perform sleep diagnostic procedures as outlined in the departmental procedure manual, with appropriate training provided for all sleep equipment.
  • Collect, analyze and integrate patient information to identify and meet patient‑specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history). Determine final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and protocols.
  • Review the patient’s history and verify the medical order.
  • Follow all sleep center protocols for in‑center and out‑of‑center testing.
  • Verify patient identity, complete registration for procedure, and obtain consent for the study upon arrival.
  • Explain the procedure clearly according to their order and developmental stage, and answer any questions related.
  • Select, calibrate, and troubleshoot equipment to ensure optimal data quality.
  • Apply electrodes and sensors according to AASM standards.
  • Perform PAP interface fitting and desensitization.
  • Provide instruction and education to patient and family members.
  • Ensure correct PPE use and adherence to universal patient policies.
  • Additional workload‑dependent responsibilities include but are not limited to:
    1. Support sleep center by performing additional duties based on operational needs.
    2. Provide enhanced care for patients requiring additional assistance with basic needs.
    3. Coordinate with caregivers, transport staff, or facility representatives to ensure continuity of care and accurate communication regarding patient needs.
    4. Adjust workflow and prioritization to accommodate high‑acuity or high‑needs patients while maintaining overall lab efficiency and patient safety.
History and Reporting
  • Obtain necessary patient information through hospital EMR.
  • Support the preparation and transmission of reports to the medical director and the EMR.
Training and Orientation
  • Provide training and orientation to new employees.
  • Participate in the annual staff appraisal process.
  • Participate in the education and supervision of students from accredited polysomnography or related allied‑health programs completing clinical rotations.
  • Support a positive learning environment by modeling professional behavior, technical accuracy, and patient‑centered care.
Records and Reports
  • Maintain records, reports, and collect statistics for administrative and regulatory purposes.
  • Assist in departmental improvement plan.
Customer Service
  • Ensure patient satisfaction and support a positive public image of the sleep center and UNC Health Lenoir.
  • Communicate professionally with patients regarding sleep center services.
  • Report and respond to customer feedback, complaints, and suggestions to improve service.
Patient Safety
  • Adhere to all hospital and departmental policies regarding patient safety, ensuring that care is delivered in a safe, secure, and compliant manner.

  • Education
    • Successful completion of an accredited PSG educational program leading to a certificate or associate’s degree with an emphasis in sleep technology.
  • Experience
    • Minimum of one year experience in sleep technology preferred.
  • Licensure / Registration / Certification
    • Active BCLS and RPSGT credentials are required.
