Job description

The Broadlawns Medical Center campus includes an acute care hospital, primary and specialty care clinics, urgent care and emergency services, laboratory, radiology, dentistry, inpatient and outpatient mental health, crisis team, and community-based behavioral support services. Broadlawns accepts all forms of insurance and earned a Level 3 rating from the National Committee for Quality Assurance.

General Description

The sleep technologist reports directly to the Medical Director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including in‑center and out‑of‑center testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care, and direct patient education. The position requires credentialing in sleep technology and the ability to oversee other sleep center staff.

$5000 SIGN ON BONUS. External applicants only.

Work Shift: 6:30 p‑m–7:00 a‑m (United States of America).

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Promotes healthy sleep hygiene practices to all patients considering each unique situation.
  • Completes the ordered study following procedure protocols to ensure collection of appropriate data.
  • Maintains equipment in proper working order by inspecting it before each test.
  • Assists with inventory control procedures.
  • Reports broken equipment per Broadlawns Medical Center policies.
  • Performs appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and makes required adjustments.
  • Follows a “lights‑out” procedure to establish and document baseline values (body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory and heart rates, etc.).
  • Performs data acquisition while monitoring study‑tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact‑free.
  • Identifies, corrects and documents artifact.
  • Follows a “lights‑on” procedure to verify integrity of collected data and completes the data collection process (repeat physiological and instrument calibrations and instructs the patient on procedure for results follow‑up, etc.).
  • Documents routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
  • Implements appropriate interventions such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration and any actions necessary for patient safety.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide age‑specific care in the treatment, assessment, and education of pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Scores sleep/wake stages by applying professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Scores clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) using AASM standards.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skill necessary to perform portable monitoring equipment preparation and data download.
  • Performs patient education and instruction appropriate for out‑of‑center sleep testing.
  • Demonstrates adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures for all sleep related equipment.
  • Sends all completed tests to the Medical Director for interpretation of results.
  • Identifies areas for quality improvement and participates in departmental meetings, performance improvement projects and community education programs.
  • Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical events.
  • Supports and embraces Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with Medical Center policies and procedures.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to a certificate or associate degree with an emphasis in sleep technology OR successful completion of a sleep technology program.
  • Must be associated with a state‑licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility or equivalent experience and documented proficiency for all competencies required of a sleep technician.
  • Certification by a nationally recognized certification board and holds either the Registered Sleep Technologists (RST), Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGl), or Sleep Disorder Specialist (SOS) credential.
  • Hold a current license in the State of Iowa for Polysomnography or a dual license in Respiratory Therapy and Polysomnography.
  • Bilingual (preferred).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s Degree in a health‑related field.
  • Two years of experience in direct patient care.
  • Eighteen months of experience in polysomnography testing.
