Job summary

Valmont Industries is hiring a Poly Pipe Operator to install polyethylene inner membranes in galvanized steel pipes. You will read blueprints, drill holes, apply coatings, and pull membranes through pipes using a winch.

This role requires attention to detail, ability to perform tool changes, and maintenance. You will work with forklifts, cranes, and various cutting tools in a manufacturing shop.

Responsibilities

• Consult with blueprints to verify the pipe is correct for inner membrane installation.

• Select poly material per blueprint; feed poly through pipe using a winch.
• Cut excess poly; prepare pipe for flange.
• Perform changeovers when blueprints indicate.
• Drill coupler holes and insert couplers; tighten in pipe.
• Complete required OEE paperwork and maintain records.
• Operate forklifts/straddle trucks to replenish materials.
• Report to Production Supervisor; no direct reports.

A Brief Summary of This Position

The main function of the Poly Pipe Operator is to work with other operators to install polyethylene inner protective membranes into galvanized steel pipes. The Poly Pipe Operator reads blueprints to select the correct pipe, drills holes as indicated on the blueprint, prepares the pipe by applying a galvanized coating, uses a winch to pull the membrane through the pipe, and cuts off any excess material. This position requires attention to detail and the ability to understand machining processes and perform tool changes and minor maintenance operations.

Essential Functions

• Consult with blueprints to verify the pipe is the correct one to be fitted with an inner protective membrane.
• Prepare the galvanized pipe by drilling holes in the flange area, grinding the flange and spraying it with a galvanizing coating.
• Consult with blueprints to see what variety of poly (polyethylene) needs to be employed.
• Pull a poly sleeve through galvanized pipe with an electric winch running it in either manual and auto mode.
• Cut any excess poly to length.
• Prepare pipe to be flanged.
• Preform changeover when blueprint indicates it is needed.
• Drill coupler holes and insert couplers in pipe using metal banding.
• Install and tighten couplers in the poly pipe.
• Complete required Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) paperwork.
• Replenish work area with materials using forklifts and straddle trucks.
• This position reports into the Production Supervisor and has no direct reports.

• The ability to read print as small as 1/16 of an inch.
• The ability to stand, walk, reach, bend, pivot, and lift up to 25 lbs. repeatedly throughout the shift.
• The ability to administer pinch force for installation of couplers.
• The ability to work over ten hours a week in overtime when required for business needs.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

• Mechanical knowledge and the ability to understand machining processes and perform tool changes and minor maintenance operations is preferred.
• Experience operating the following pieces of production equipment is preferred: overhead cranes, forklifts, cutting torch, grinders, winches, reciprocating saws, banding tools and hand-held drills.

Educational Background

Must be able to understand plainly written documents in English as well as follow verbal/written instructions. The position also requires the use of a computer to perform time keeping functions.

Job Training Skill Development

• Blueprint reading skills will be used to determine part dimensions and tolerances from the design drawings.
• Precision measuring equipment including calipers, micrometers, various types of dial gages, plug gages, thread gages and snap gages will be used to check parts to within =/- .0001 (one ten thousandth of an inch).
• Knowledge of machine processes and how to perform tool changes and minor maintenance operations.
• Forklift crane and straddle truck operation.
• Poly machine operation and troubleshooting.
• Occasional small repairs need to be done on the machine.

Employee makes simple routine decisions and also makes decisions that may affect the quality of the products being manufactured. These are decisions that affect the employee’s own work quality and output. More complex decisions that affect the rest of the department will be made with the guidance of the lead person or supervisor. Although most of this job is covered by standard practices, good common sense and quality control procedures are essential aspects of completing this job in a successful manner.

Physical Effort

Must be able to stand, walk, reach, bend, pivot, push, pull and lift repeatedly throughout the shift. The pushing, pulling and lifting will range from 0 – 50 lbs. Although some items weigh more, there are lifting devices in place for the employees to use. Must work at a pace to enable the cell/department to attain set goals. Must be able to withstand this physical effort for the duration of designated shift.

Working Conditions

This job is performed in an indoor shop environment. The temperature range inside this area is from 60 degrees in the winter to over 100 degrees in the summer. Some outside work may be required during the various seasons. This is a noisy environment with sound levels above 80 decibels. Ear plugs should be worn. Safety glasses and metatarsal safety boots are required at all times in the work area. The employee will operate machines that use / have hydraulic fluids and compressed air. Employee may be exposed to chemical vapors when the poly becomes heated. The employee must be able to spend the entire shift in the shop environment. Most warehouse operations are exposed to some type of disagreeable working conditions such as cold, heat, dust, dirt, fumes, noise, vibration, or oil.
