Job summary

City & Borough of Sitka Alaska seeks a Traffic Officer to enforce state and local traffic laws, respond to accidents, and conduct traffic stops. You will work under the Administrative Division Major and coordinate with patrol and other divisions.

The role requires knowledge of police procedures, the ability to analyze situations quickly, and the capacity to write reports and testify in court.

You may participate in training programs, assist with school zones, and support other officers as needed.

Job Summary

Duties include proactive enforcement of State and local traffic laws, targeted traffic enforcement, traffic crashes, DUI enforcement, Traffic Homicide Investigations and other related duties. Work is performed under the direction of the Administrative Division Major.

JobResponsibilities

• Enforce traffic state statutes and local ordinances to ensure the safety and security of drivers and pedestrians.
• Monitor traffic flow and respond to accidents and emergencies.
• Direct traffic and pedestrians during peak hours and special events.
• Issues traffic citations and fines for traffic violations.
• Conduct traffic stops and perform vehicle inspections.
• Investigate traffic accidents and prepare reports.
• Maintains training records.
• Testify in court.
• Work collaboratively with patrol and other divisions to ensure the best possible outcome.
• Participate in training programs to maintain and improve traffic officer skills.
• Assist crossing guards and fill in, as needed.
• Monitor school zones and enforcement.
• Assist with FTO program with providing training to new officers.
• Identify traffic issues, create action plans and intelligence bulletins.
• Social media presence, ability to create graphic designs.
• Participate in special events.
• Ability to work various schedules.
• Provide support to other officers, staff, and divisions.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION (OR EQUIVALENT):

• High School graduation or possession of an acceptable equivalent diploma.
• Non-probationary status
• Satisfactory or higher performance evaluation(s) for that least one (1) year preceding the announcement date of impending testing.
• No corrective action within the eighteen (18) months preceding the announcement date of impending testing.
• No disciplinary action within the thirty-six (36) months preceding the announcement date of impending testing.
• No disciplinary action for insubordination or failure to follow lawful orders within five (5) years preceding the announcement date of impending testing; or,

Preferred Qualifications:

• Certified Internal Investigations Investigator
• Certified Background Investigator
• Active and current Instructor Certification
• Working knowledge of Accreditation, Policies and Procedures

Special Qualifications:

• Possession of a Florida Law Enforcement Certification.
• Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License required.
