The Department of Police Services in the Division of AdministrativeAffairs at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater seeks a PoliceOfficer (Police Officer I, CP039).
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the provision of law enforcementfunctions, technical aspects of law enforcement, coordination of specialty functions and security services for the department and campus. This position reports to and works under the generalsupervision of a Lieutenant. Depending upon circumstances, situations and operations, this position may also report to the Director and his or her designee.
60% Performance of law enforcement functions.
- Detection of violations of State laws and WI AdministrativeCode which occur within the legal jurisdiction of thedepartment.
- Take appropriate corrective action including warning, citing orarresting suspected violators (criminal, traffic or alcohol relatedoffenses).
- Conduct investigations of alleged or suspected criminalactivity to arrest the perpetrator of the crime or to deteroccurrences of any future criminal activity.
- Interview complainants, witnesses, suspects and others who mayhave knowledge of the violation in order to obtain facts andinformation.
- Record and document incidents by preparing written reportsconcerning those incidents.
- Collect and preserve physical evidence at crime scene to beused later for prosecution of arrested individual(s) and tomaintain the chain of evidence.
- Make lawful arrests or detentions of suspected violators bytaking them into physical custody and independently determiningwhether perpetrators should be incarcerated or released pendingcourt appearance.
- Photograph and fingerprint suspect(s) who have been arrestedwhen necessary.
- Provide court testimony for cases designated by the districtattorney’s office(s).
- Enforce parking regulations by taking appropriate actions(citing and/or towing). Patrol all areas of campus, by either footor motorized patrol, to provide security and protection to thoseareas.
- Patrol utilizing a bicycle is also authorized for PoliceOfficers who have successfully completed a Police Cyclist TrainingProgram.
- Provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies asnecessary.
- Perform other departmental duties as assigned by Lieutenant,Assistant Chief, Chief/Director and/or his or her designee.
25% Performance of security and various other services to the University community.
- Develop and give presentations concerning law enforcement orcrime awareness/prevention topics to various groups asassigned.
- Provide money escorts to local banks.
- Provide crowd control and traffic direction.
- Identify and make necessary reports of security, safety andrepair problems.
- Report obvious safety deficiencies, which are found duringpatrols of campus buildings, facilities or grounds, to theappropriate staff responsible for the repair or correction. Some ofthese safety deficiencies may include lights not functioning, triphazards, exposed electrical wiring, and obstructed emergency exitsor other potential dangers.
- Provide directions, information or other services to faculty,staff, students and the general public as individual situationsrequire.
- Assist Emergency Medical Services personnel during incidents ofmedical crisis, as needed and within the scope of training.
10% Performance of technical aspects of lawenforcement.
- Maintain proficiency and meet department standards in areas of CPR/Basic Life Support, firearms, defensive tactics, physicalfitness and emergency vehicle operation.
- Attend classes and in-service training to maintain and enhancecurrent law enforcement knowledge and skills.
- Attend specialized classes to obtain skills and training.
5% Performance or coordination of specialty functions for thedepartment.
- Satisfactorily perform specialty functions, which are assigned,to support department operations and mission. Some of thesefunctions may include areas such as Education/Crime PreventionOfficer, Court Officer, Firearms Instructor, DAAT Instructor,Bicycle Patrol Officer, Evidence Custodian, Crime Scene Technician,Shift or Event Officer-in-Charge, Hazardous Materials, NationalIncident Management System or any other comparable area ofspecialization or coordination as needed by the department.

Well-qualified candidates can expect a starting hourly rate of$39.00 commensurate with the candidate's education, relatedexperience, and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
- Candidates cannot have any unpardoned felony convictions or convictions for situations involving domestic violence.
- Must be able to complete a WI Department of Justice “LawEnforcement Recruit” training course and become certified as a LawEnforcement Officer in Wisconsin; OR already be certified by the WILaw Enforcement Standards Board as a Law Enforcement Officer.
- A post-secondary degree OR a minimum of 60 credits ofpost-secondary education from an accredited school.
- Must possess a valid WI Driver’s License with a good record, which includes non-convictions for which the license wassuspended/revoked.
- Must be at least 18 years of age, of good character and be “free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which mightadversely affect performance” as a law enforcement officer.
