Under general supervision, the Part-Time Police Officer performs a variety of law enforcement, public safety, crime prevention, and community policing functions to protect life and property and maintain a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors of Hampton University. The Part-Time Police Officer supplements full-time staffing levels and may be assigned to patrol operations, special events, emergency response activities, and other law enforcement assignments as determined by the department. The position exercises law enforcement authority within the scope of approved training and applicable laws and operates in accordance with Hampton University Police Department policies and procedures. Part-time officers perform the same law enforcement functions as full-time officers while under direct or indirect supervision.

Examples of Duties
  • • Perform preventive patrols by vehicle, bicycle, or foot to deter criminal activity and ensure campus safety.
  • • Respond to criminal incidents, emergencies, suspicious activity, disturbances, accidents, and requests for service.
  • • Investigate criminal and non-criminal incidents and prepare complete and accurate reports.
  • • Enforce federal, state, and local laws, as well as University rules and regulations.
  • • Exercise arrest authority in accordance with Virginia law and departmental policy.
  • • Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations as assigned.
  • • Provide traffic enforcement, crowd management, and security services during University events and special functions.
  • • Assist with emergency management operations, evacuations, and disaster response activities.
  • • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, visitors, and external law enforcement agencies.
  • • Testify in court and administrative proceedings as required.
  • • Operate departmental vehicles, communications equipment, and technology systems safely and effectively.
  • • Attend required departmental meetings, training programs, firearms qualifications, and professional development activities.
  • • Perform other related law enforcement and public safety duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Typical Qualifications
  • • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • • Associates degree or higher in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Homeland Security, or related field preferred.
  • • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Officer Certification required, or ability to obtain certification in accordance with state standards.
  • • Prior law enforcement, campus police, military police, corrections, or related public safety preferred.
  • • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • • Ability to effectively interact with diverse populations while exercising sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion.
  • • Working knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, procedures, and community-oriented policing concepts.
  • • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under stressful and emergency conditions.
Supplemental Information
  • • Must meet all applicable Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) minimum standards for law enforcement officers.
  • • Must successfully complete the same pre-employment screening process required of full-time police officers, including a background investigation and other employment screenings.
  • • Must be capable of performing law enforcement duties and maintaining certification and training requirements established by the department.
  • • Must successfully complete department-authorized firearms training and maintain annual firearms qualification standards.
  • • Must successfully complete the department's Field Training Program and all required in-service training.
  • • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • • Must be available to work evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, special events, and emergency assignments as needed.
  • • Must attend required departmental meetings and training sessions.
  • • Must comply with all Hampton University Police Department policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and standards of conduct.
  • • Must maintain physical fitness and capability necessary to perform the essential functions of a sworn law enforcement officer.
  • • Must be a sworn officer who is employed on a regular basis and works less than a full-time position, but more than 20 hours per week, and may be regulated by law (1 VAC 55-20-20).
