Job summary

Louisville Metro Government is seeking candidates for the LMPD Lateral Academy. The program begins March 29, 2027, with participation in the Louisville Metro Police Academy’s academic and physical recruit training, ongoing examinations, and various duties in multiple bureaus to build familiarity with department operations.

Applicants must have three years as a sworn Police Officer in the United States, valid Kentucky Peace Officer Certification or reciprocity, be a U.S.

Qualifications

• Requires minimum three years as a sworn Police Officer in the United States.
• Must hold or obtain Kentucky Peace Officer Certification (reciprocity possible).
• Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old.
• Disqualifications apply for certain substance-related offenses and criminal history.
• Pre-employment drug screening, polygraph, physical agility test, and written/oral psych evaluations required.

Responsibilities

• Attend classes on procedures, regulations, laws, and criminal justice topics.
• Work in various operational bureaus to gain familiarity with department functions.
• Participate in training for firearm use, driving, self-defense, arrest procedures, and equipment use.
• Take tests to measure knowledge and progress.
