Job summary

The City of Tullahoma is currently looking for Police Officers. Police Officers are under the direct supervision of their shift Sergeant and Lieutenant.

Officers are responsible for providing for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing criminal laws and/or city ordinances, and promoting good community relations. Officers shall become familiar with places of public assembly, official buildings, and crime prone areas.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED; POST certification within one year of employment or promotion.
• Minimum age 21; must not have a prior record of criminal activity.
• Qualifications as outlined in the Tennessee Code Annotated.

Responsibilities

• Enforce all laws and/or ordinances for the City of Tullahoma and protect lives and property.
• Maintain a police presence in patrol areas to deter criminal activity as directed.
• Investigate suspicious persons and activities and follow up on citizen complaints.
• Assist the Criminal Investigation Division by securing crime scenes and collecting evidence.
• Prepare cases for court and testify in traffic and criminal cases as needed.
• Observe radio transmissions and maintain professionalism while communicating.
• Respond to calls for service safely within the assigned area.
• Perform related work as required.

SUMMARY

The City of Tullahoma is currently looking for Police Officers. Police Officers are under the direct supervision of their shift Sergeant and Lieutenant. Police Officers are responsible for providing for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing criminal laws and/or city ordinances, and promoting good community relations. Officers shall become familiar with places of public assembly, official buildings, and crime prone areas. Officers shall properly investigate all cases assigned to them, including apprehension of the offender, collection of evidence, recovery of property, and preparation of the case for prosecution.

EXAMPLES OF RESPONSIBILITY

• Enforce all laws and/or ordinances that the Tullahoma Police Department is responsible for which includes, but is not limited, to protecting the lives and property of all persons and maintaining peace and order in the City of Tullahoma.
• Maintain a police presence while driving a patrol car in any assigned location of the City of Tullahoma in order to deter criminal activity at the discretion of their supervisor.
• Investigate suspicious persons and situations and unusual or illegal activity including any situations that come about as a complaint from a citizen or call for service.
• Perform any necessary physical action so that suspects can be controlled and apprehended for the safety of the community.
• Arrest and incarcerate persons in accordance with legal requirements and Tullahoma Police Department general orders.
• Monitor traffic and enforce laws and ordinances to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures.
• Control and direct the flow of vehicle traffic as necessary within the City of Tullahoma.
• Accurately prepare and promptly submit any and all required reports that come as the result of any official investigation or assignment.
• Respond to calls for service in a safe manner within the assigned area of responsibility.
• Perform preliminary and follow-up investigations of criminal and traffic offenses which are assigned to and/or brought to the attention of the officer.
• Assist the Criminal Investigation Division in securing any and all crime scenes and evidence as needed including interviewing principals and witnesses.
• Prepare cases for court and Grand Jury and testify to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases.
• Observe any and all radio transmissions and adhere to an attitude of professionalism while operating/transmitting on the radio.
• Obtain and serve criminal warrants and juvenile petitions as required.
• Perform related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Develop and maintain knowledge and understanding of any relevant laws and ordinances that govern the City of Tullahoma including city personnel regulations and general orders pertaining to the Tullahoma Police Department.
• Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.
• Meet POST requirements in firearms standards and show competence and proficiency when operating or deploying any and all necessary equipment.
• Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.
• Develop and maintain knowledge and understanding of requirements to successfully prosecute a case within the legal system which includes, but is not limited to, case law that governs search and seizure, self-incrimination, arrest, right to counsel, interrogation, and the collection and preservation of evidence.
• Maintain high ethical and moral character so that credible testimony may be given in a court of law and any other proceeding.
• Ability to be present and on time for any required proceedings whether civil or criminal in the proper uniform or attire as designated by the Tullahoma Police Department.
• Knowledge and ability to work with computers and software programs relevant to the position.
• Ability to demonstrate an understanding, consideration, in respect of cultural, religious, and gender differences when interacting with the public and colleagues.
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with associates, representatives of other agencies and the general public.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS

Physical Requirements - Physical demand requirements are at levels for those of active work. Regular performance of heavier tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces; bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching above shoulder level and working in confined spaces; lifting or carrying weights of twenty to fifty pounds and occasionally very heavy items of one hundred pounds or over. Tasks may require infrequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions (cold, rain, fumes, chemical sprays).
