City of Sweetwater (TX) is seeking a Police Officer under general direction of the Police Sergeant to perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties to protect citizens and property and ensure compliance with laws. You will patrol, make arrests, investigate incidents, respond to calls, direct traffic, testify in court, and engage with the community to maintain safety.

A valid Texas driver's license, U.S.

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years old with a maximum age of 44 years at time of examination.
  • High school graduate or equivalent GED.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License and have a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Background investigation required.
  • Preference given to holders of Texas peace officer certification (TCOLE) at entrance.
  • If served in the U.S. armed forces, DD-214 must be provided.
  • Must be physically sound and capable of performing duty.

Responsibilities

  • Patrol an assigned area by foot or vehicle.
  • Make arrests of individuals who violate the law or ordinances.
  • Subdue violent individuals.
  • Enforce City, State, and Federal laws.
  • Respond to calls for assistance and provide police protection.
  • Issue traffic citations or warnings for traffic violations.
  • Investigate traffic accidents and direct traffic.
  • Conduct preliminary crime investigations and collect/document evidence.
  • Conduct searches per due process.
  • Interact with the community to build strong working relationships.
  • Provide public safety during emergencies.
  • Testify in court as required.
  • Respond to reports of sick, injured, or demented persons.
  • Engage in aggressive, proactive patrols.
  • Investigate suspicious vehicles and persons.
  • Respond to and investigate causes of alarms.
  • Prepare cases and reports for court.
  • Transport prisoners to facilities.
  • Check security of businesses and vacant houses.
  • Conduct targeted patrols of schools and parks.
  • Assist in animal control.
  • Direct traffic at fire scenes.
  • Maintain and inspect department vehicles/equipment.
  • Complete assignments and report to work on time.

Job description

Under general direction of the Police Sergeant, the Police Officer is to perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties to maintain citizen safety, protection of life and property, and compliance with City, State, and Federal laws.

  1. Patrol an assigned area via foot or vehicle to ensure law compliance and investigate suspicious activities, individuals, or conditions.
  2. Make arrests of individuals who violate the law and/or ordinances.
  3. Subdue violent individuals.
  4. Enforce City, State, and Federal Laws.
  5. Respond to calls for assistance and provide the necessary police protection.
  6. Issue traffic citations or warnings to individuals violating traffic laws.
  7. Investigate traffic accidents and direct traffic.
  8. Conduct preliminary investigation of crimes and crime scenes to uncover and collect/document relevant evidence and/or testimony.
  9. Conduct searches according to due process procedures.
  10. Interact with the community to establish a close working relationship.
  11. Provide general public safety services during emergency conditions such as inclement weather and traffic accidents.
  12. Testify in court as required.
  13. Respond to reports of sick, injured or demented persons.
  14. Conduct an aggressive, proactive police patrol in an assigned area.
  15. Investigate suspicious vehicles and persons.
  16. Respond to and investigate causes of mechanical alarms.
  17. Prepare cases and reports for court.
  18. Transport prisoners to County or local facilities.
  19. Check the security of business establishments and reported vacant houses in this jurisdiction.
  20. Conduct targeted patrols of school areas and municipal parks.
  21. Assist in the recovery and control of animals in this jurisdiction.
  22. Direct and control vehicular and pedestrian traffic at fire scenes.
  23. Maintain and inspect department vehicles and equipment.
  24. Complete assignments as directed.
  25. Arrive at work on time every day, in good physical and mental condition.
  • Applicants must be 21 years old with a maximum age of 44 years. Documentation must be provided.
  • Must be high school graduate or have equivalent GED.
  • Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License and have a satisfactory background driving record and pass a background investigation.
  • Must be able to read and write the English language.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States.
  • Preferably possess certification as a peace officer as established by Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) at time of examination. Applicant shall provide evidence of certification on or before date of entrance examination.
  • If applicant served in the armed forces of the United States, a DD-214 must be produced with application.
  • Must be physically sound free from any defect, which may adversely affect his/her performance of duty.
