Job summary

National Police in Oregon seeks a Police Officer to perform patrols, enforce laws, investigate crimes, and handle service calls. The role reports to the Sergeant/Chief and may supervise when on relief duty.

Qualifications

• Be at least 21 years of age upon appointment as Police Officer.
• Be a high school graduate or have attained a GED certificate.
• Successfully complete the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) in 5 minutes and 30 seconds or less.
• CJIS fingerprints must be completed and cleared prior to start date.
• Testing must occur within 30 days of hiring to receive the CJIS certification.
• Demonstrate excellent moral character as determined by a background investigation.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Meet all physical, vision, hearing, and psychological examination requirements.

Responsibilities

• Works on rotating shifts performing security patrols, traffic control, investigations and first aid at accidents.
• Responds to calls for service; interviews suspects, victims, witnesses, and drivers; preserves evidence; makes arrests when needed.
• Serves writs, warrants, and subpoenas and enforces city ordinances.
• Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities and provides mutual assistance during emergencies; appears in court and testifies.
• Coordinates activities with other officers or departments and maintains relationships with other law enforcement agencies.
• Maintains confidentiality of laws.

Position Summary:

Performs police patrol, enforces laws and ordinances, investigates crimes, professionally service calls for service, makes arrests if necessary, and handles other law enforcement activities as required.

Works under the general supervision of the Sergeant and/or the Chief of Police.

Exercises occasional supervision as a senior officer on special or relief duty. May supervise reserve police officers.

Essential Functions:

• Works on rotating shifts performing security patrols, traffic control, investigations and first aid at accidents. Patrols city streets, parks, commercial and residential areas to preserve the peace and enforce the law. Observes vehicular traffic and enforce violations with citations/warnings.
• Responds to calls for service. Interviews suspects, victims, witnesses, and drivers. Preserves evidence. Makes arrests for violations of laws. Processes crime scenes and traffic crashes.
• Serves writs, warrants, and subpoenas. Enforces city ordinances.
• Maintains contact with supervisory personnel to coordinate investigation activities and provides mutual assistance during emergency situations. Participates in departmental meetings and attends in-service training. Appears in court, provides testimony, and presents evidence in trials for violation of laws and city ordinances. Directs traffic and patrols area for parades, athletic events, fires and/or other occasions of a special or emergency nature. Prepares reports and includes all necessary forms and documents.
• Coordinates activities with other officers or other departments as needed, maintains effective working relationships between co-workers, exchanges information with officers in other law enforcement agencies, and obtains advice from the City Attorney and District Attorney’s Office regarding cases, policies and procedures, as needed and assigned.
• Maintains the laws of confidentiality.

Requirements:

• Be at least 21 years of age upon appointment as Police Officer.
• Be a high school graduate or have attained a GED certificate.
• Successfully complete the National Testing Network written examination.
• Successfully complete the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (also known as the ORPAT) in 5 minutes and 30 seconds or less.
• Demonstrate excellent moral character as determined by an extensive, in-depth background investigation.
• Have a valid driver’s license.
• Meet all applicable physical, vision, hearing, and psychological examination requirements as required by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training.
• Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) fingerprints must be completed and cleared prior to start date. Testing must occur within 30 days of hiring to receive the CJIS certification. A passing score is 70%.
• Successfully complete an oral interview.
• Willing to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Be a U.S. citizen within 18 months of employment or a nonimmigrant legally admitted in the United States under a Compact of Free Association. Candidates hired under citizenship criterion two must obtain U.S. citizenship within the timeframe listed or may be subject to termination.
• A two-year community college degree is highly desired, but not required.
