Job summary

Qualifications

Job Description:

The Police Lieutenant is a sworn police officer with command level authority within the Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Police Department. This position is responsible for the planning, organizing, and directing of goals across the College in multiple geographic jurisdictions while providing administrative support and coordination for campus police.

The NOVA Police Department is established as a College-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain the safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules, and duties dependent on the needs of the Department and/or staff professional development.

Duties and Tasks:

• This position is responsible for and held accountable for evaluating college-wide and police department goals and directives, analyzing complex situations often during emergency circumstances, and ensuring compliance with federal and state laws;
• NOVA policies and procedures; and College Police Department general orders across multiple locations.
• The Police Lieutenant makes decisions and coordinate resources within their command structure to ensure operational components and officers at multiple campuses are functioning and capable of responding to health and safety matters that could result in the loss of life and/or property.
• The Police Lieutenant is required to ensure that staff under their command meet and retain all required Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) certifications and complete associated training required by the Commonwealth of Virginia, NOVA, and the Chief of Police.
• This position is accountable to make high-level decisions regularly concerning law, policy, and general orders.
• The responsibility extends to safe-guarding lives and college property, and also carries the expectation to be proactive in threat management.
• The Police Lieutenant is held responsible for monitoring and evaluating all staff under their command to include supervision of staff during non-working hours.
• The Police Lieutenant has frequent contact with College leadership, staff, and students.
• This position is responsible for organizing and coordinating joint enforcement efforts with other law enforcement agencies and for providing security through crime prevention activities, patrol, investigations of reported and suspected criminal activity, and the enforcement of state laws.
• The core responsibilities outlined in this EWP are representative of the Police Lieutenant position. Duties may be assigned by the Chief of Police or designee based on the operational needs and priorities of the Police Department. The Police Lieutenant shall also perform other duties as assigned by the Chief of Police or designee.
• Make regular requests from employees for updates and input on college decisions and share feedback with supervisors for inclusion in the NOVA Brief

• Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.

Minimum Work Experience:

• Must be at least 21 years of age.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Certified as a police officer by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Service.
• Experience in the field of law enforcement at Sergeant or above to include supervision of law enforcement personnel at the Northern Virginia Community College Police Department.
• Must pass a thorough background investigation.
• Ability to testify in court proceedings.
• Unrestricted Valid Driver’s License in good standing.

• BA/BS in a related field or equivalent training and experience.
• Experience in the field of law enforcement at the level of Lieutenant or above, including supervision of law enforcement personnel.
