Job summary

Police Department Hawaii is seeking a Police Evidence Specialist I to learn the basic functions of the Scientific Investigation Section and assist at crime scenes or with processing case subjects. You may testify in court regarding work performed.

Training will cover locating and preserving physical evidence, maintaining chain of custody, and preparing reports using standard laboratory equipment. A four-year degree in physical, biological, or forensic sciences and a valid Hawaii driver’s license

Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in the physical, biological or forensic sciences.
  • Valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3).

Responsibilities

  • Learsn and assists with searching, identifying, and recovering physical evidence from crime scenes; and marking, preserving, packaging, and securing recovered evidence.
  • Learns and assists with preparing evidence reports and maintaining chain-of-custody requirements.
  • Learns and assists with taking measurements, notes, and simple sketches to document the crime scene.
  • Learns and assists with taking digital photographs of crime scenes, latent prints, evidence, and case subjects under standard and sub-optimal conditions.
  • Learns and assists with recovering latent prints from crime scenes and evidence using dusting, chemical, lifting and photographic techniques.

SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION SECTION
POLICE EVIDENCE SPECIALIST I, SR-16 (PC-284, PC-488)
SUMMARY OF DUTIES

Under the direct supervision of an experienced Police Evidence Specialist, this position will receive orientation in and learn the basic functions, principles, concepts, work processes, methods, techniques, and reference materials used in the Scientific Investigation Section; and assist at crime scenes or with processing of case subjects. The incumbent may testify in court proceedings regarding work performed.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
  1. Learns and assists with: searching, identifying, and recovering physical evidence from crime scenes; and marking, preserving, packaging, and securing recovered evidence. Learns the selection of appropriate personal protective equipment when handling hazardous evidence (e.g. gloves, eye protection, respirators, safety clothing, etc.) and assists with preparing it appropriately for transfer (e.g. rendering weapons safe, choosing appropriate containers, safety labeling). Learns and assists with preparing evidence reports and maintaining chain-of-custody requirements.
  2. Learns and assists with: preparing reports to document the crime scene and evidence recovered; and repairing diagrams using the measurements taken from the crime scene and drafting software. Inputs data, information, and documents into departmental and SIS record management systems.
  3. Learns and assists with taking measurements, notes, and simple sketches to document the crime scene, including placement of physical evidence.
  4. Learns and assists with taking digital photographs of crime scenes, latent prints, evidence, and case subjects under standard and sub-optimal conditions (e.g. low light, bright light, confined spaces, adverse weather, etc.).
  5. Learns and assists with recovering latent prints from crime scenes and evidence using dusting, chemical, lifting and photographic techniques.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major work in the physical, biological or forensic sciences.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Hawaii State driver's license (Type 3).
