Job summary

CSUCI is seeking a Chief of Police who will report directly to the Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs and serve as the university’s chief law enforcement and public safety executive.

The role requires guiding policing, emergency management, and related public safety services, while supervising ~25 staff and coordinating with campus leadership on safety, continuity, and compliance.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, public administration, emergency management, organizational leadership, or a related field.
  • Eight years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience with significant supervisory, management, or command-level responsibilities.
  • Current California POST Basic Certificate or ability to obtain within one year of employment.
  • Valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain within the timeframe established by the University.
  • Ability to meet all applicable California POST and CSU requirements for appointment and continued service as a peace officer.

Job description

Reporting directly to the Vice President for Business & Financial Affairs, the Chief of Police serves as CSUCI's chief law enforcement and public safety executive. The Chief leads approximately 25 sworn and civilian employees and provides strategic direction for policing, emergency management, business continuity, communications, transportation and parking, professional standards, accreditation, and related public safety services.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, public administration, emergency management, organizational leadership, or a closely related field. Additional qualifying executive, command, or senior management law enforcement experience may be considered as a substitute consistent with university policy.

  • At least eight years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including significant supervisory, management, or command-level experience.
  • Possession of a current California POST Basic Certificate, or ability to obtain this certificate within one year of employment.
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License, or ability to obtain one within the timeframe established by the University.
  • Ability to meet all applicable California POST and CSU requirements for appointment and continued service as a peace officer.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, leadership, emergency management, higher education administration, or a related field.
  • Senior command or executive-level law enforcement experience, particularly in a university or college environment.
  • Completion of POST Command College, the FBI National Academy, or a comparable executive leadership program.

Experience with the Clery Act, emergency management and business continuity, 9-1-1 communications, CJIS and records, property and evidence, transportation and parking, behavioral intervention or threat assessment, labor relations, and law enforcement accreditation.
