Job description

DEFINITION: This position is responsible for completing training in the enforcement of state and local laws.

REPORTS TO: The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions.

"We offer a VA approved Apprenticeship Program for military veterans who are eligible to receive funding from their Post 9/11 GI Bill, and facilitate the training and education to receive those benefits from the VA."

After successfully completing the BLET course and being awarded your probationary NC LE Certificate, your pay will be adjusted to $60,000 per year.

  • Attends and successfully completes Basic Law Enforcement Training (B.L.E.T.); obtains a probationary law enforcement certificate.
  • Participate in educational training and successfully pass weekly test; No deficiencies.
  • Participates in physical training and show a steady physical improvement. Successfully pass the Police Officers Physical Ability Test (POPAT).
  • Gains knowledge in the investigation of crimes and accidents.
  • Gains knowledge in preparing incident, accident, and arrest reports.
  • Gains knowledge in processing crime scenes.
  • Gains knowledge on preparation of accurate incident, accident and arrest reports.
  • Gains knowledge in developing skills needed to prepare cases and testify in District and Superior Courts.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Be a high school graduate or have passed the General Educational Development test indicating high school equivalency. Diplomas earned through correspondence enrollment are not recognized.
  • Applicants must be able to read on a Tenth-grade reading level.
  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • No experience requirements.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission.
  • Must be at least Twenty years old by the time of taking the state exam.
  • No felony convictions. No serious misdemeanor convictions in the last 5 years.
  • No Domestic Violence convictions.
  • No DUI, DWI convictions in the last 5 years.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Basic knowledge of law enforcement vehicles, equipment, tools, and technology.
  • Basic knowledge of criminal investigation tools and techniques.
  • Basic knowledge of department policies and procedures.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include local, state, and federal laws; City ordinances; City administrative and personnel policies; Police Department General Orders; department policy memoranda; Police Department Rules of Conduct and Duty; and North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY

The work consists of related law enforcement duties. Potentially life‑threatening situations contribute to the complexity of the position.

SCOPE AND EFFECT

The purpose of this position is to complete law enforcement training by assisting in the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws. Success in this position contributes to the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws and to the effectiveness of department operations.

Contacts are typically with other City staff; court officials; representatives of other law enforcement agencies; crime victims; suspects, prisoners, and inmates; and members of the general public.

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, and motivate and influence persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, running, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee may be exposed to potentially life‑threatening situations. The work requires the use of specialized law enforcement protective devices.
