POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the general direction of the Medical Director of Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) and Manager of POCT, with operational guidance from the POCT Assistant Supervisor, the POCT Specialist supports the oversight and compliance of point-of-care testing across Boston Medical Center. The role ensures that POCT activities meet regulatory and accreditation requirements, including CLIA '88, CAP, and Joint Commission standards.

The POCT Specialist partners with laboratory leadership, test site managers, and clinical staff to support quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and effective use of POCT technologies and data management systems. This position operates with general supervision and serves as a technical and regulatory resource across multiple patient care areas.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
  • Maintains current knowledge of technical, clinical, and regulatory aspects of POCT methods, devices, and data management systems, and serves as a subject matter resource across the organization.

  • Serves as a consultant to laboratory staff, test site managers, providers, and administration on POCT practices, including regulatory compliance, test utilization, and troubleshooting of technical issues.

  • Supports the evaluation, selection, validation, and implementation of POCT methodologies and data management systems in collaboration with POCT leadership and clinical stakeholders to meet clinical, regulatory, and operational requirements.

  • Monitors and supports quality assurance activities, including proficiency testing, quality control documentation, corrective actions, and verification of test performance characteristics, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards across all POCT sites.

  • Provides oversight support for instrument function checks, maintenance, and troubleshooting activities, including investigation and resolution of discrepant or unexpected results.

  • Ensures documentation and compliance for initial training and ongoing competency assessment of personnel performing waived and non-waived POCT.

  • Reviews POCT data management systems and post-analytic processes to ensure accurate, timely, traceable, and compliant integration of test results into the patient medical record.

  • Supports inventory control and documentation processes to ensure use of validated methods and prevent use of expired or unapproved reagents and supplies.

  • Collaborates with POCT leadership to communicate compliance findings, support audit readiness, contribute to quality assurance initiatives, and identify opportunities to enhance monitoring through centralized data systems.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or an applied science (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry) from an accredited institution, including completion of a clinical internship

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
  • Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or equivalent agency as a Medical Technologist

  • Certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician, or specialty certification from a recognized certifying agency. Such agencies include but are not limited to ASCP, American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), Health Education and Welfare (HEW), and American Society of Microbiologists (AMT)

EXPERIENCE:
  • A minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory experience, including at least 1 year of point-of-care testing experience.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory practices, including quality control and quality assurance methodologies.

  • Knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements, including CLIA '88, CAP, and Joint Commission standards.

  • Ability to analyze and resolve technical issues related to POCT instrumentation, methods, and data systems.

  • Ability to interpret quality control, proficiency testing, and compliance data to support

Compensation Range:

$61,500.00- $89,500.00

This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, and a broad range of factors is considered when making an offer. This includes education, experience, skills, and certifications/licensures as they directly relate to position requirements; as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness.
