Job summary

The City of Hoover is seeking a Plumbing, Gas Fitter or HVAC Installer professional with a HS diploma and two Alabama journeyman/master certifications. The role requires five years of relevant experience, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to obtain a City Driver’s Permit.

Knowledge of ICC certifications is valued with optional within-one-year attainment. Starting salary is dependent on experience, with a pay range of $29.06 to $38.93 per hour.

Qualifications

  • Five years or more as Plumbing, Gas Fitter or HVAC Installer.

Responsibilities

  • Inspect new and existing industrial, commercial, and/or residential properties to ensure compliance with City ordinances, approved plans, specifications, regulations, and codes.
  • Review plans and specifications for City and building code compliance and confer with contractors regarding related installations.
  • Confer with and provide information regarding code requirements to developers, engineers, architects, property owners, and others.
  • Address complaints and take action to ensure resolution or alternatives.
  • Investigate complaints regarding existing buildings or new construction for code compliance or problems.
  • Interpret codes and regulations and explain permit and compliance conditions.
  • Coordinate plumbing, gas, and mechanical inspection work with other City personnel.
  • Maintain records of inspections and regulatory actions, including reports and notices to correct violations.
  • Review blueprints for new construction and perform final inspections for conformity to code.
  • Provide information and demonstrations to new employees on tasks.
  • Keep supervisor informed on progress and potential problems.
  • Attend meetings and trainings to stay current on best practices.
  • Respond to citizens' questions in a courteous manner.
  • Communicate regularly with others to maximize interdepartmental efficiency.
  • Perform other related duties as needed.

Education

High School Diploma or G.E.D.
Two Alabama certifications (Journeyman/Master) among Plumber, Gas Fitter, HVAC
ICC Mechanical/Plumbing certification within 1 year

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Plumbing experience in both residential and commercial
  • Inspects new and existing industrial, commercial, and/or residential properties to ensure compliance with City ordinances, approved plans, specifications, regulations, and codes;
  • Reviews plans and specifications for City and building code compliance and confers with contractors regarding related installations;
  • Confers with and provides information regarding code requirements to developers, engineers, architects, property owners, and others;
  • Addresses any complaints or problems from concerned parties and takes appropriate action to ensure an expedient resolution or alternative means to address the problem;
  • Investigates complaints regarding existing buildings or new construction to determine appropriate usage, code violations, or existing problems;
  • Interprets codes and regulations and explains permit and compliance conditions;
  • Coordinates assigned plumbing, gas, and mechanical inspection work with that of other related City personnel;
  • Maintains complete and accurate records of all inspections and any regulatory actions taken, including preparing written reports and correspondence and issuing notices to correct code violations;
  • Reviews blueprints for new construction and performs final inspections of assigned projects to ensure overall conformity to all code requirements;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other directly related duties consistent with the role and function of the classification.
