Job description

JLRD, Inc. is a Florida-based MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) and fire protection consulting engineering firm founded in 1991. Headquartered in West Palm Beach with offices in Merritt Island, Jacksonville, and Tampa, JLRD delivers all four engineering disciplines in-house across healthcare, education, government, federal, aviation, utilities and infrastructure, commercial and mixed-use, hospitality, residential, and mission-critical facilities.

We are privately owned and engineering-led. We compete on technical depth, not scale, and we build teams accordingly.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Plumbing Designer is an independent producer within JLRD's Plumbing discipline. This role owns assigned portions of projects from concept through construction documents, proactively coordinates with other disciplines, and produces high-quality plumbing design documents that require minimal rework.

This is a design role, not a production-only drafting role. We are looking for a Plumbing Designer who understands building plumbing systems, can make design decisions within a defined scope, and has the coordination judgment to identify and resolve issues rather than simply execute direction. JLRD's plumbing work includes domestic water, sanitary, storm, natural gas, and medical gas systems, with medical gas experience particularly valuable given the firm's healthcare portfolio.

This is a Designer-track role, not a PE-track role, with the opportunity to progress to Senior Designer as technical capability, system-level understanding, and independent judgment develop.

This position reports to the Lead Plumbing Designer.

Position is based in West Palm Beach, Florida. On-site.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Plumbing Design Production

  • Own assigned plumbing design scopes from concept through construction documents
  • Produce Revit MEP models and construction documents for domestic water distribution, sanitary and vent piping, storm drainage, natural gas piping, and medical gas piping where applicable
  • Develop single-line and riser diagrams, fixture schedules, equipment schedules, details, and annotations
  • Perform fixture unit analysis and support hydraulic calculations
  • Incorporate engineering markups and redlines accurately and completely
  • Maintain drawing organization, clarity, and consistency across project documents
  • Coordinate with Mechanical, Electrical, and Fire Protection designers on system layouts
  • Work with architectural and structural teams on chase locations, piping routes, and fixture placement
  • Identify drawing conflicts and resolve them or elevate with a proposed solution
  • Support clash detection and multidisciplinary coordination reviews

Quality and Standards

  • Maintain adherence to JLRD drafting standards, Revit templates, and file structure
  • Identify and correct inconsistencies before internal review
  • Critically review AI-augmented design output rather than accepting it at face value
  • Contribute to improvements in templates and standards as technical capability develops

Construction Administration Support

  • Revise drawings based on RFIs, submittal comments, and field changes
  • Maintain updated drawing sets during construction
  • Support senior staff with submittal review and site observation documentation
  • Participate in occasional site visits in support of project teams

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate degree or Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field; equivalent experience considered
  • 3+ years of plumbing design experience for building systems within an MEP consulting environment
  • Strong proficiency with Revit MEP and AutoCAD
  • Solid understanding of plumbing drawing conventions and construction documentation
  • Working knowledge of IPC and Florida Building Code Plumbing
  • Ability to interpret and implement engineering markups accurately
  • Strong attention to detail and organization
  • Ability to coordinate effectively across multiple engineering and design disciplines

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Medical gas system experience
  • Healthcare project experience, including exposure to FGI and AHCA requirements
  • Familiarity with hydraulic calculations and fixture unit analysis
  • Navisworks experience for clash detection
  • Comfort with AI-augmented design tooling
  • Autodesk Revit MEP certification

SCHEDULE

  • Monday through Thursday, 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM
  • Friday, 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM (half-day Fridays year-round)

BENEFITS

  • Health insurance with 100% of employee premium covered by JLRD, eligible after 30 days
  • Short-term and long-term disability and life insurance
  • Safe Harbor Non-Elective 401(k) with 3% JLRD contribution, eligible after one year
  • 2 weeks vacation, 6 paid sick days, and 7 paid holidays
  • Half-day Fridays year-round
  • Annual discretionary bonus
