Job summary

George Mason University is seeking a Plumber II to perform skilled plumbing, irrigation, and gas system work across campus. This Virginia state employee position requires reliability, adherence to safety standards, and ability to work a Sunday-Thursday shift from 6am to 2:30pm.

The role supports a busy Facilities & Campus Operations team, with benefits and a focus on preventive maintenance, documentation, and on-site work at the Fairfax campus.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of, or ongoing participation and/or completion of courses in vocational or technology education.
  • DPOR Backflow Prevention Device Worker certification or ability to obtain the certification.
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in the plumbing trade.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes; safe work practices.
  • Active valid driver's license meeting Mason Vehicle Use Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Install, modify, maintain, and repair plumbing, irrigation, and gas systems and equipment.
  • Diagnose defects and repair/maintain piping systems and fixtures for water, sewer, or natural gas.
  • Test, repair, and maintain safety devices and cross‑connection devices.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and routine tasks per schedule.
  • Follow safety procedures and document work orders and time.

The Plumber II performs a series of skilled tasks in the plumbingtrade by assisting more senior-level trades workers and performsrelated duties as required or assigned. The position performsskilled installation, maintenance, and repair of the University’splumbing, irrigation, and gas systems. The Plumber II ensuresreliable operation through troubleshooting, preventive maintenance,and accurate documentation.

The work schedule for this position is Sunday-Thursday,6am-2:30pm.

This position is required to work additional hours in the event ofan emergency. This may require reporting to work early, stayinglate, and/or working weekends.

Additionally, this position is designated as “Essential Personnel.”All essential personnel employees are required to report for snowremoval and assist with clearing grounds, roads, pathways,sidewalks, or steps.

Responsibilities:
  • Under limited supervision, performs installation, modification,maintenance, and repair work on University plumbing, irrigation,and gas systems and equipment;
  • Performs skilled journey-level work to diagnose defects and toinstall, repair, and maintain piping systems and fixtures forwater, sewer, or natural gas with a high degree of quality andefficiency;
  • Tests, repairs, and maintains cross-connection devices andpressure vessel safety devices;
  • Performs routine, recurring preventive maintenance activitieswithout direction or oversight and within establishedschedules;
  • Cuts, threads pipe, and makes proper connections;
  • Installs, repairs, and replaces valves, controls, traps, tanks,etc.;
  • Repairs and replaces motors, pumps, expansion tanks, andirrigation systems;
  • Tests, installs, and maintains gas piping and equipment;
  • Maintains wastewater management systems; installs and/orreplaces fixtures; performs work on site or in a shop;
  • Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehiclesupplied with tools and materials, and keeps it maintained and ina orderly, clean condition;
  • Performs miscellaneous duties such as cleaning and painting equipment and mechanical areas;
  • Picks up materials from suppliers when requested;
  • Inspects areas and reports problems to the supervisor;
  • Maintains paperwork and electronic communication, includingwork orders and recording time;
  • Orders and includes materials on work orders in an expedientmanner;
  • Follows established university and departmental policies andprocedures;
  • Follows established safety procedures and reports accidents andproblems to the supervisor promptly;
  • Performs assigned progressive on-the-job training tasks todevelop skills in the plumbing trade; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Completion of, or ongoing participation and/or completion ofcourses in vocational or technology education;
  • DPOR Backflow Prevention Device Worker certification or theability to obtain the certification;
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 4+ years) in theplumbing trade;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods,practices, and tools used in the plumbing trade;
  • Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safetyprecautions;
  • Knowledge of local, state, and national plumbing codes;
  • Ability to use necessary hand and power tools and testingequipment;
  • Ability to analyze plumbing systems and controls to determineproblems and initiate repairs as directed by the supervisor;and
  • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motorvehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements foroperating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle UsePolicy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review thedriver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of allcandidates selected for employment, contingent upon a favorablereview.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Journeyman Plumber license or equivalent experience; and
  • Demonstrated progressive experience (generally 5+ years) incommercial plumbing work.
