Responsibilities

• Supervises students on school grounds during recess or lunch.
• Explains playground rules and disciplines students per procedures.
• Intervenes to stop fights or resolve arguments; refers ongoing issues to principal or teacher.
• Monitors safety, ensures safe play, reports unsafe equipment or conditions.
• Develops rapport with students, listens to problems, refers emotional concerns to counselor.
• Ensures visitors check in; watches for loitering around grounds and communicates with staff.
• Fills accident reports as necessary and alerts staff for severe injuries.
• Encourages students to clean up litter and maintain grounds.
• Reminds students when to return to the classroom.

Job Description

This position supervises students on the school grounds during recess or lunch periods. Responsibilities include monitoring behavior, enforcing safety rules. The playground monitor is responsible for the safety and security of students during recess. They will be required to be outside in all kinds of weather. The playground monitor reports major incidents to the principal.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Supervises students on school grounds. Explains playground rules; disciplines students per procedures for inappropriate behavior. Intervenes to stop fights or resolve arguments. Refers students with continuing behavior problems to principal or teacher for action as needed. Prepares written reports documenting serious behavior infractions.
2. Monitors safety of school grounds; ensures that students play in a safe manner. Reports unsafe school equipment or conditions to school administrator.
3. Develops positive rapport with students; converses with students, listens to problems and answers questions. Observes students for indications of emotional problems and refers these students to school counselor.
4. Ensures that individuals not associated with the school have checked in at the school office; communicates with school administrators concerning individuals seen loitering around school grounds.
5. Fills out accident reports as necessary. Alerts office staff of severe injuries requiring medical attentions.
6. Encourages students to pick up litter on school grounds.
7. Alerts students when it is time to return to classroom.

Working conditions:

Requires work outdoors in inclement weather. Experiences frequent interruptions. Required to deal with distraught or angry students, and to stand for prolonged periods. Confined to work area.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. High school graduation or equivalent.
2. Experience working with children, school setting desirable.
3. Ability to learn and perform proper restraint techniques.
