Job summary

Somic America Inc. is seeking a Plating Operator in Wytheville, VA to load and unload parts on an automated line and perform periodic quality checks. You will work closely with a team to keep the line running efficiently while following safety protocols.

This role requires ability to work in a fast-paced setting, learn quickly, and accept coaching from leadership. Candidates must be willing to operate in a production environment with exposure to chemical processes.

Qualifications

• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures.
• Ability to perform basic math including rates, ratios and percentages.
• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions.

Responsibilities

• Feeds or removes material from machines and operates equipment to meet specifications.
• Performs setup and monitoring tasks and notifies supervisor of discrepancies.
• Inspects parts for conformance to specifications and reports issues.
• Completes line PMs and ensures pokayoke devices are operational.
• Maintains a safe work area and participates in continuous improvement.

Summary

The Plating department is where our parts go through an automated line and get dipped into various chemical & Acid baths to provide them with protection against rust & corrosion. The Plating Operator has a very fast-paced manual process of loading parts onto pegs & racks, and then off-loading the parts once the process is finished. It is a very team-based department where the operators work together to keep the line running; they will also do periodic quality-cycle checks. The operators do not come into direct contact with the chemicals, but the chemical smell and fumes are more prominent there than other areas of the plant. Candidates for this role must work well in a team atmosphere, and be able to work at a fast-pace in hot temperatures; they must also be willing & ready to learn, as well as be accepting of coaching & advice from their Team Leader & supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Feeds or removes material from machines. Sets up and operates numerical control machine to machine or assemble components to specifications by performing the following duties. Satisfy SA’s Quality goals and objectives in completion of activities or duties (reference SA Quality Manual and Quality Policy). Performs assigned role in the Environmental Management System (EMS) in accordance with W010902.

• Removes material from boxes and places on conveyor or in fixture.
• Fills hoppers with material as required.
• Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools.
• Measures and inspects parts for conformance to specifications.
• Adjusts machine, clears jams according to procedure when automatic programming is faulty or machine malfunctions.
• Notifies Team Leader or Supervisor of discrepancies.
• Reviews setup sheet and specifications to determine setup procedure, machining sequence and dimensions of finished component.
• Attaches fixture to machine bed and positions and secures workpiece in fixture according to setup instructions.
• Assembles cutting tools in toolholders and positions toolholders in machine spindles as specified or inserts cutting tools in specified machine magazines.
• Manipulates controls and enters commands to index cutting tool to specified set point and to start machine.
• Changes cutting tools and location of workpiece during machining process as specified in setup instructions.
• Completes line PM’s (planned maintenance) as assigned.
• Confirms that all pokayoke devices are operational.
• Maintain and provide a safe work area and work in a safe manner.
• Submit suggestions for improvements.

Education And/or Experience

High School diploma or general education degree (GED).

Language Skills

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs and Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
