Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization in New York City seeking Research Engineers for the Platform team. You will advance research methods and package them into reusable modules that others can build on, contributing research-driven capabilities to Basis platform offerings and ensuring research advances have clear paths to impact—commercial or societal.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to conduct high-quality research via publications, reports, or open-source projects.
• Ability to drive software projects from prototype to production-ready code.
• Deep knowledge of probabilistic programming, causal inference, or related areas.
• Proficiency with Python and research tooling, including PyTorch/JAX, version control, testing, and docs.

Responsibilities

• Advance research methods aligned with Basis mission (probabilistic programming, causal inference, reasoning under uncertainty).
• Build Basis core technology modules as reusable, production-ready components.
• Translate experimental ideas into robust implementations with docs, tests, and examples.
• Contribute to Platform development by integrating novel techniques into APIs and features.
• Identify high-value research problems and define technical approaches from ideation to implementation.
• Collaborate across research and engineering to ensure smooth integration with platform infrastructure.
• Ensure research has a clear path to impact (commercial deployment, open-source release, or internal transfer).
• Optionally publish findings in journals or at conferences and contribute to Basis culture.
