Job summary

Contabo seeks a Platform Engineer to own the operation and evolution of its hosting platform. You will manage Proxmox/KVM virtualization, ZFS/Ceph storage, networking, and observability to ensure services stay fast and reliable for customers worldwide.

You will automate with Ansible and Git, plan maintenance and migrations, and help shape capacity planning. Collaboration with Platform, Support, Dev, Network, and Security teams is essential, with English as the common language.

Qualifications

• Experience operating large-scale Linux and virtualization environments (5+ years).
• Hands-on with Proxmox/KVM, Ansible, and monitoring tools.
• Familiar with ZFS and Ceph storage.
• Networking fundamentals (BGP, L3 routing, VLAN, OVS).
• Strong English; German language skills are a plus.

Your creative fieldWe are looking for a Platform Engineer (all genders) to start as soon as possible in a full-time, permanent position. We embrace a remote-first approach, but you can choose whether you’d like to work in a hybrid model or entirely on-site, depending on your proximity to one of our locations.

To keep our systems running and our customers satisfied, you’ll take responsibility for the operation and further development of our hosting platform—from Proxmox/KVM virtualization to storage (ZFS, Ceph) and networking, all the way through to monitoring and observability. You’ll serve as the technical escalation point for our Platform Support team, analyze complex issues to their root cause, and ensure that problems do not recur.

You’ll use Ansible and Git for automation, plan and oversee maintenance, upgrades, and migrations, and contribute to capacity and hardware planning—for example, when introducing new hardware generations or setting up new locations. You’ll be responsible for your own domain of the platform, make well-informed design decisions, and document them in a transparent manner. You’ll actively share your knowledge with the team.

In doing so, you’ll work closely with Platform, Support, Dev, Network, and Security to solve problems together and drive improvements. Since our teams and data centers are spread across the globe, part of your work will also be conducted in English.

Awesome ProspectsYour personality, combined with:

• training as an IT specialist in system integration, a degree in computer science, or a comparable qualification and experience
• several years of professional experience (at least 5 years) in the operation or development of large-scale Linux and virtualization environments
• solid hands-on experience with Linux (troubleshooting, performance), Proxmox/KVM or comparable virtualization technologies, Ansible, and monitoring solutions (e.g., Zabbix, Prometheus/Grafana)
• Ideally, experience with ZFS and/or Ceph, networking fundamentals (BGP, L3 routing, VLAN, Open vSwitch), Git/CI, and scripting in Bash or Python
• Self-motivation and a proactive approach: You contribute ideas, document decisions clearly, and enjoy sharing your knowledge with others
• A plus: Terraform, Kubernetes, Vault, PowerDNS, or experience in a hosting/cloud environment
• Enjoy working with other teams and working independently
• Very good German and English skills
