Job summary

CalPortland's Plant Mechanic role involves daily maintenance and repair of the ready-mix concrete plant, including electrical systems, feeders, screens, and conveyors. The job requires diagnosing problems, performing repairs, and maintaining logs; overtime and weekend work may be necessary in support of production.

Candidates should have a High School Diploma/GED, a valid driver's license, welding and cutting experience, and ability to work in a heavy industrial environment, with PPE and OSHA

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Valid driver's license with safe driving record.
• Welding and cutting experience is necessary.
• Must be able to work overtime and weekends.
• Work in a heavy industrial environment with exposure to elements, dust, and noise.
• Some work in confined spaces and at extreme heights.
• Physical requirements: lifting up to 50 lbs.
• OSHA familiarity and safety compliance.
• Able to lead a maintenance team when needed.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose problems and perform mechanical repairs and maintenance to ready mix plant machinery, including batch plants, motors, conveyors, electrical equipment.
• Inspect, service and report the condition of machinery needing repair; maintain a service log
• Rebuild or fabricate parts and repair electrical equipment
• Utilize a variety of hand tools to repair, adjust, and dismantle equipment being repaired and/or installed
• Read and interpret technical manuals
• Coordinate ordering with purchasing team parts from approved vendors
• Operate fixed and mobile equipment as necessary; use loaders to move and lift parts into place
• Must always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in designated areas
• Comply with all environmental, health, and safety policies and procedures and requirements

The Plant Mechanic is responsible for the daily maintenance and repair of the ready-mix concrete plant as well as other miscellaneous work that needs to be performed including but not limited to the electrical systems, feeders, screens, conveyors, etc.

Education

Requirements/Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
• Welding and cutting experience is necessary
• Will be required to work overtime and weekends as business needs determine
• Must be able to work in a heavy industrial environment; exposure to weather elements, dust, noise, etc.
• Some work will be performed in confined spaces and at extreme heights
• Physical requirements: standing, walking, kneeling, climbing, crouching, stooping, bending, feeling, balancing, sitting, and frequent lifting of up to 50 lbs.
• Strong communication, written, and oral skills
• Must be able to wear all required personal protective equipment including safety glasses, respiratory protection, safety belts, gloves, etc.
• Familiarity with OSHA regulations
• Work independently and lead a team
• Ability to operate loaders and various other types of mobile equipment preferred
• 3 years’ experience as a mechanic in the ready-mix/concrete industry is preferred

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer pre-employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration/clearance as well as ongoing alcohol and drug testing.
