Plant Engineer

About the Position

Sugaright, LLC is seeking a hands-on Plant Engineer to support the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of our manufacturing facility. This position will lead and support capital projects, equipment reliability initiatives, process improvements, troubleshooting, and plant engineering documentation.

The ideal candidate is a practical problem-solver who is comfortable working in an active industrial environment and collaborating with Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Safety, contractors, and equipment vendors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day engineering support to Operations and Maintenance.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, process, utility, and control-system issues.
  • Develop practical corrective actions that improve equipment reliability and plant performance.
  • Plan and execute capital and expense projects from initial concept through installation, startup, and closeout.
  • Prepare project scopes, budgets, schedules, specifications, bid packages, cost estimates, and engineering documentation.
  • Coordinate contractors, vendors, equipment suppliers, and internal project resources.
  • Monitor project safety, quality, cost, and schedule performance.
  • Analyze equipment failures, downtime, operating trends, and process data.
  • Recommend improvements to increase throughput, product quality, energy efficiency, yield, and equipment availability.
  • Partner with Maintenance to strengthen preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Support equipment criticality reviews, spare-parts planning, and root-cause failure analysis.
  • Maintain and update P&IDs, drawings, equipment files, operating manuals, specifications, and asset records.
  • Support Management of Change activities and ensure plant modifications are properly reviewed, documented, and communicated.
  • Ensure engineering work complies with applicable safety, environmental, food-safety, quality, building, and fire-code requirements.
  • Participate in safety reviews, inspections, audits, incident investigations, and corrective-action tracking.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to plant employees.
  • Support plant shutdowns, outages, emergency repairs, and startups as needed.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Industrial, or a related engineering discipline.
  • At least three years of engineering experience in manufacturing, food processing, chemical processing, refining, or a similar industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of project management, process improvement, industrial equipment, reliability, and workplace safety.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, equipment drawings, electrical diagrams, technical specifications, and operating data.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced plant environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with AutoCAD, CMMS platforms, process historians, PLC or control systems, or project-management software.
  • Experience managing capital projects and industrial contractors.
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Engineer-in-Training (EIT), Lean, Six Sigma, or project-management certification.

Physical and Scheduling Requirements

This position works in both office and active industrial plant environments. The employee must be able to walk and stand for extended periods, climb stairs and ladders, bend, stoop, reach, and access equipment throughout the facility.

The role may require personal protective equipment and exposure to noise, heat, cold, dust, odors, moving equipment, and elevated work areas. The employee must occasionally be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Additional hours, weekends, or holidays may be required during outages, major projects, startups, or operational emergencies.
